I had one severe case, which was really miserable because I in turn had an adverse reaction to the antibiotics, then a couple of more mild cases. But I also had TONS and TONS of clogs, once we got a handle on that (by fixing LO's tongue tie), it never happened again.

Adverse GI reactions are a common reaction of lechitin, and the doses often recommended for clogs are quite high. Putting a heating pad on it a few times a day can help keep things unclogged, as can massaging in a hot shower. Also, mastitis doesn't always result from a clog, so could have just been bad luck with some bacteria getting in a small crack...

I never had mastitis but I had tons of clogged ducts (so much so that my ob/gyn recommended a mammogram at my postpartum appointment) and my lactation consultant recommended sunflower lechitin. That seemed to work for me and the clogged ducts went away without massaging, soaking, etc.

Mastitis is definitely not fun!! I got it twice with my first son and once with my second. It was bad but I could still function. I never took antibiotics. I drank water, and combed my boob with a comb and conditioner in the shower. And massage helped . Both were from oversupply and going a little too long between feedings.

@LadyDi: I had a single really bad case with DS1 that antibiotics knocked out. With DS2 I had recurrent (maybe 5 or so) mild cases that apparently were caused by never fully getting rid of the infection. But I had an oversupply with him as well and once I went on lecithin never had any more clogs or mastitis. My breasts felt sore for a while too after the symptoms faded but I think that’s more because of all the stress the infection and working out the clog put on them.

@MamaCate: Thank you, I am so sorry you got it twice. I have been doing A LOT of massaging to the point that I am worried that is what's causing the soreness.

@bhbee: Thanks, I've been thinking about trying lecithin but saw on another thread that it can cause GI issues. I'm glad I am not the only one who couldn't feel the clog though. I have spent a lot of time over the past two weeks feeling myself up and trying to figure out where it is.

You could try lecithin (sunflower is popular I think?) - think it works as an ongoing help to keep clogs away.

I also got mastitis without ever feeling a clog. It was awful and I feel for you having a case that was hard to clear up. Even the 3 days mine took to improve was awful. Hugs!

@LadyDi: yes I had mastitis twice with my second baby. The first time was early and the second was about 8 weeks later. I think the best thing you can do for prevention is try to clear clogs by massaging in the shower or during feedings/pumping sessions. after that early period I never got it back again.

It is so hard and I can see how you would be worried but I do think repeats are fairly rare! I remember I had a friend who seemed susceptible to clogs and she ended up taking some supplement her LC recommended to help but I don’t remember the name.

If you had mastitis once, did it come back again?

I had pretty bad case of mastitis about two weeks ago and just finished my antibiotic. I am REALLY paranoid about getting it again because it was truly awful and took awhile to get on an antibiotic that worked, I had to have a breast ultrasound, etc. I'm concerned because I never knew I had a clogged duct to begin with (and I am familiar with them from my previous babies). I could never feel where it was, but as the mastitis got worse my whole left side of my breast was red, hot, inflamed. It's better now but I still feel like my breast is a bit sore. I can't feel a plugged duct but I am worried it's still blocked and I can't feel it and I'll get mastitis again. If you had mastitis did it come back? What do I do for a blocked duct if I can't tell if there is one or not?
