@serenity207: Yes! Isn't it so awesome and so mind-numbing at the same time? Haha.

I really want to record his insistent little voice so I can remember this stage, but when the phone or camera come out he usually clams up.

This is hilarious because I was just about to post the same question! My son is about the same age and does the same thing. It's driving me nuts!!! On one hand, yay! Speech! Communication! Adorable toddler pronunciations! On the other hand, noooo mooooreeee....stopppppp....The worst is when I can't figure out what he's saying and his repetitions get more and more insistent and then he's mad that I'm just not getting it. This will be cute one day looking back...I think...

@ShootingStar: lolol! Omg yes.

Aaaand, today DS helped pour his own milk. It bubbled a little as it went in the cup. So as you can guess...

"It has bubbles in it! Just like seltzer! JUST LIKE SELTZER!!"

I was thinking about this thread today when DS spent about five full minutes in the car saying:

Uh oh puppy
Uh oh puppy
Uh oh puppy
Uh oh puppy
Uh oh puppy
Uh oh puppy
Uh oh puppy
Uh oh puppy

And it just went on and on, lol. Eventually I acknowledged what he was saying and got him to stop and say something else.

@2littlepumpkins: @JennyD: that's exactly it. I think he's just so excited to be talking, and so are we! But omg the repetitions, haha.

I think at younger ages they want to have conversations, and they can speak, and make sentences, but they don't quite know what to say next. so they repeat the same things over and over.

It seems like a lot but if talking is new for him, I don't think it necessarily falls outside the normal range, since you were praising him. I try to always engage dd or at least answer her when she talks but it can result in some (truthfully!) annoying repetitions.

Yes mine repeats a lot. Maybe not 30 times but at least 10. Especially if it's a new idea.

My toddler does this too. We walked past a church on the way to the swimming baths a couple of weeks ago. She observed that the "dingy bells makin' a noise" and I agreed enthusiastically. Well, she repeated that phrase all the way to the pool, the entire time it took to get dressed and through half of the swim session!

@MoonMoon: yeah I feel so bad when I do that. Sometimes i have little patience though since I teach middle school and have nearly 100 students talking to me all day. But I try my best to remind myself: remember when he barely had any words and all the worry, we'll now he's talking up a storm. That usually stops me from wanting to tell him to hush.

Thanks everyone for your responses, I'm glad the incessant repetition is just a toddler quirk.

@iluvboba637: I admit I often get tired, like "yes, yes, yes, yes... Ok let's talk about something else now!" :silly:

@MoonMoon: In that case it sounds like totally normal toddler behavior! And positive feedback/praise is a great habit, it just can have some unintended results like this! It is so great that LO is doing so well at articulating himself!

My LO usually repeats stuff until we acknowledge what he's saying. For instance at the stop light he will constantly say red stop, red stop, red stop. Until someone says yes red means stop. Other times even acknowledging him isn't enough and sometimes I get so frustrated I just said ok mommy heard now please stop. And we change the subject to something else that interests him.

@MamaCate: that's a really good point. We definitely were praising his observations and giving positive feedback. We're so used to that from speech therapy! And to your other point, you're right, he doesn't repeat phrases out of context, but in context he repeats like crazy!

@MoonMoon: I think that seems like kind of a lot, but within the range of normal. I wonder how you reacted--were you and DH praising these sentences or giving positive attention? If so, I wonder if he was repeating the words in an attempt to elicit more positive feedback?

I think I would be more concerned if he kept repeating these same phrases for days and out of context rather than just practicing new words or looking for feedback?

I've mentioned before that our DS, 27 months, was a late talker. But with some awesome therapy, his speech has developed and he's really expressive. But DH and I notice that he repeats things to a noticeable degree. We believe it's normal toddler behavior but I am wondering.

As an example, last night during dinner he asked to try some of my ginger ale. I said sure but he might think it's spicy. So he took a sip and exclaimed "not spicy!" Then he said "it has bubbles! Like seltzer!" Well for the rest of dinner he repeated these 3 phrases over and over and over again. Easily, he cycled through saying those things as he drank ginger ale 30, 40+ times. It's cute, and it's great he's making observations and connections, but when does the repetition cross the line into possibly meaning something else?

What do you think?
