@mediagirl: I am also looking to replace French doors in my home, and I found out that French doors and sliding doors are two different standard sizes. French doors are usually 74" but sliding doors are only 72". If you want to replace with anything but French doors, there probably will need to be some construction. Also.. where did you find that door? I really like it.

@mediagirl: That door that you found is nice!

We have two 6 foot doors next to each other in our living room, and there was a huge opening we found after we moved in so they had to be replaced (plus they were SO heavy and at least 20 years old)

I was worried about the installation and how much demo/reno it would take, but we hired a company to do the install and you can hardly tell there was a change. They left all the interior molding and outside trim.

I'd ask around for recommendations in your area though. DH called the well known companies first and their quotes were three times what we ended up paying. And we're very happy with our new doors!

We just got the simple models, but even the change from the old (brown) to the new (white) really brightened the place up. And far fewer bugs are getting in this summer.

@mediagirl: we do have a screen on the outside so we can leave the door open

This sliding glass door that I found in a google search isn't horrible. I really don't want to have to do a lot of construction, but I don't see a way around that with the way it's currently situated.

@honeybear: we heard that the previous owner was a DIYer.....he sure was....and we need something with screens so we can open them. These don't have screens.

@Mamaof2: @T.H.O.U.: yeah, we wouldn't mind having just one door. we do have a door in the kitchen area - to the far left of the photo you can see the molding for it. I think that was the original door to the outside and this room originally just had windows in it.

I'd probably do French doors in the middle with big side-lights on the side. The double set of doors is kind of strange, but I guess it increases ventilation? Would you ever have/want them all open? I guess if the goal is ventilation, I'd do a slider. Having four doors there feels kind of clunky if you're out on the deck with them open, right? I imagine that you have to have the middle ones sticking straight out.

@mediagirl: would you be ok with just 1 door?

We have 3 panels - 2 are solid and 1 is a door
You could do 3 panels and 1 door

Maybe french doors in the center and windows on the sides?

Has anyone replaced french doors with another type of door? We have these beautiful french doors in the house we are moving to but they leak. Badly. They need to be replaced and we are thinking of going with something that isn't such a known leaky door as a french door. My husband wants sliding glass doors but I hate them. The one we have is so plain and boring.

Not the best pic ever but this is the best pic I took of that room. Ideas on what to replace these doors with?
