<description>&#60;p&#62;IDK, I'd have some compassion for her knowing how to solve the problem fast. I mean, I'd go over how the teacher expects the solution to look, but I'd also say &#34;yes, how you're solving it is also fine, this is how you'll do it in upper grades. There's often more than one way to get the solution!&#34;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Common core is great for breaking down how math works, but it's also incredibly frustrating. DS came into K knowing how to count fast in his head, but after two years of being drilled in Common Core, his first impulse is to draw 82 gallon jars of water or 47 crayons when solving a problem. It's taking him a while to un-learn that, even though the class has finally gotten to the point where they're no longer expected to draw pictures and counters.

<description>&#60;p&#62;I don't know about the math, but the first 2 fall in the category of self-regulation so you could search for those types of skills. I remember reading once about a pre-school curriculum that focused on building those skills and one of the core activities they did was having kids generate play scripts. So if they were pretending to be firefighters, for example, they would plan out the sequence of events they would play (we get a call, we drive to the scene, we put out the fire, we save a cat) Then at play time they were expected to follow that sequence and would be reminded to look back at their plan and stay on task. I think its quite overkill for every day but it could be interesting to try a few times and see how it goes?

<description>&#60;p&#62;DD is in 1st grade and we got her report card today.  She got N's for needs improvement in the following:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;-Manages time effectively, stays on task&#60;br /&#62;
-Demonstrates organizational skills&#60;br /&#62;
-Math Effort &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;I'm not worried about the 'grades' per se but I  agree with the teacher on the assessment that (especially the first two) need improvement.  What are some ways I can encourage improvement in those areas?&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;For math specifically she always jumps to solving the problem and then goes back to do the 'common core' part.  I've taken great effort to learn and only say good things about common core.
