@Lilbear: Ugh! Honestly that is even worse. I am so sorry your little one had to be the "lesson". That is just ridiculous. I am so appalled at the reaction of the teachers I just can't even deal. :( I am glad she likes her new class!

@Mrs. Lion: I think their current accident policy is adequate, but they weren't following their own policy. This, of course, caused a huge communication breakdown, which caused our growing problem to fly under the radar. This is just the kick in the pants that they needed to fully follow proper protocol.

@Lilbear: The unprofessional comments really say a lot about the teachers...if that happened in my room I would be on the phone calling you to let you know during the day, apologizing profusely for not getting there in time. "She lets this happen to her"!!!???!!! OMG I am furious for you!

I am glad you feel like it is being handled for now. I am surprised that they don't have a better accident policy already, but maybe it is a step in the right direction. I definitely think that this was not handled properly, and I think you did the right thing. Hopefully the director will take this seriously and do some pretty significant teacher training about these events and how to handle them (and monitor!) properly.

The meeting with the director basically involved a lot of apologizing on their part. They will be reprimanding the teachers and discussing proper parent communication with them (the teachers were making very inappropriate comments to me ie "she lets this happen to her" and "she's so good you almost forget to watch her"). They are revamping their accident report policy so that they ensure monitoring of the reports so that these situations get nipped in the bud faster. I'm not overly enthused by this plan of action, because it isn't much of a plan.....outside of any future complaints will be going towards building a case for removal of the teachers or the aggressive student.

My LO is safe now in this other room, and prior to these past 2 months, she had a great 14 month stretch in the baby rooms at this center. So, it's really just an issue with bad teachers in that one room and an aggressive kid that isn't being monitored enough. They know we have documented everything, taken pictures of her injuries, and now we have copies of their accident reports, so they are being very careful with our LO's well being. They know that she will be pulled out and there will definitely be a report, as well as a possible lawsuit if anything close to this degree of injury happens ever again.

I'm very confident that she is fully out of danger in this new setting, so we are continuing. Obviously if I thought she was in any danger we wouldn't keep her there. It was only that one room for the 2 months that she was in that room......our other 14 months at this center have been fine.

If I'm wrong and we come across another aggressive biter, I going to give that kid a diaper wedgie!!!!!! Jk

Please let us know how the talk with the director went today, I hope she comes up with some sort of long-term game plan to remedy situations like this so nothing like this happens to the other kids in that class!

We are having a meeting with the director this morning. Hopefully we have some sort of resolution beyond just switching rooms. Also, dd had her first day in the new room and she had a great time. Her new teacher seems super nice, and the room was a much calmer and organized environment. I often remarked to my friends that I didn't get the "warm fuzzies" with her negligent teacher, the way I did with her teachers before. Yesterday, I totally got the warm fuzzies with her new teacher, so I think this will be a very positive change for LO.

That is insane. My LO isn't in daycare, but any place we join - Mom's groups and gym care - if he bites or slaps, we had to agree we would remove him for 3 weeks. If it occurred again, he couldn't come back! It's crazy to me that they would see what happened to your little girl and not take action other than move her :(

I would definitely report it and ask they update you on what action you take. And if things become uncomfortable, then I think you have your answer on what kind of place they are, and maybe move on. So sorry this happened!

I would talk to the director and report. Can you look for a new daycare? I think as parents we have to trust our guts. It's hard enough to leave our LO's without second guessing and wondering if they are safe.

I will say that the one time I had a problem, I brought the issue to the Director, and it was reported and then the employee was formally reprimanded. I really wasn't sure if I should report it, I didn't want someone to lose their job, but I thought about it overnight, and I decided that there was no way that what the teacher did was anything but wrong and had ill intent, so I reported it. I'm glad I did, because eventually it the teacher was let go bc of problems with aggression with another child later on. If I hadn't reported it, she might have flown under the radar even longer. And hopefully, if a person has enough reported issues, they won't be working in an industry where they care for children anymore, so even if you pull your child, you should still report it.

Just to fill in what happened in our case...This new teacher was the end of the day fill-in for my daughter's toddler class. She was so new, I didn't even really know her name, she was just there the last 20 or 30 minutes sometimes when I picked LO up late. From the first time I met her, I just didn't get a good vibe. All of LO's daycare teachers have been SO SWEET and it's always immediately apparent they are just good-natured and love all the kids. This woman just gave me an icy vibe. But I shook it off bc she was only there at the very end of the day.

When I pick LO up, I always peek through the window to see what she's doing, because I always think it's so cute to see her playing with her friends. Well, one day, I peeked in and she was on the changing table, and this new teacher was changing her. LO turned her body a little to the wall, and reached her opposite arm over toward something. The teacher VERY roughly grabbed her arm and literally threw it back from away from the wall. Like violently. Like the way people do out of frustration or anger. A way that we NEVER handle LO. I am not one to make a big deal out of little things, but seeing that truly shocked me. And it took me a second to process what I had saw before I walked in. When I did walk in, the teacher seemed very nervous, and awkward. Like she knew she had just been really aggressive with my LO, and then *poof* there I was.

I spent all night obsessing over it. I tried to replay it over and over in my mind and see if there was any reason that could have called for that - like LO was reaching for something dangerous...In other words, it happened so fast, and I spent a lot of time making sure it wasn't just a really quick movement- to keep her out of harm's way. There was nothing on that changing table that would have been harmful. I finally decided to go to the director, I just knew it wasn't right and I wasn't imagining the aggression. She must have just been at her wit's end at the end of the day, and out of patience. That's fine but she made a huge mistake acting out on it. I let the director know that I didn't want her near my daughter. She was removed from my LO's class, and like I said, had another problem with a child, and was fortunately fired.

So I think you should absolutely report it, regardless of if your LO is still there or not. Good luck!!!

@Lilbear: Oh my gosh! Poor girl!

So, after reading this, I called a friend of mine who is a day care inspector. She says you absolutely should report, and they're also likely to involve CPS to check on this girl's behavior (although not necessarily, and she doesn't know about every state.) I asked her how many of the complaints she received came from parents of kids attending the daycare, and she said 75-80% Who else is going to do it? (She also said it's good that you have photos and the inspector will want to see them). I totally get your concerns about retaliation, but a lot worse can happen with a negligent teacher than this, and if my kid were in that daycare, I would hope you'd report.

Good luck!

Your poor daughter! After seeing those pics, I would demand a meeting with the director. I understand that biting happens, but the severity of your DD's bites crosses the line. Like you said, this was probably something that took more than a few seconds to happen. If you aren't satisfied by the director's response, I would consider changing schools and report them. To me, it's more about the quality if the providers than the quality of the facilities.

After seeing those pictures, I would ask for an in person meeting with the head director. Discuss your concerns, that your believe other children are at risk and are concerned the teacher was negligent. In that meeting I would have a clear list of things you want to happen (teacher being fired, all parents in the room being notified of incidents, whatever it might be) and let her know that if it doesn't happen you feel like you have no choice but to report the daycare and remove your child. You have to be willing to actually leave if they decide not to make those changes, but at the very least it gives them fair warning as to the gravity of the situation. I would also make sure the director saw the photos as they tell as very different story than "oh maybe there was a minor incident and a parent overreacted."

Good luck. Sorry you have to deal with this.

@Lilbear: is this happening frequently to this degree, or was this a one time thing?

It is totally possible that the teachers are negligent, but i worked with kids this age and things like this do happen incredibly quickly. It is possible that they are telling the truth and were just busy with other kids. I worked in a class once where I had 4 kids who regulaly bit others, and I spent my whole day trying to prevent it. I was a phase, and they fed off of each other. Eventually we worked through it, but it was a rough couple months. It did sometimes happen that i wouldnt see it happen, and I dont think I was being negligent....its just that with 10 children that age in one room, it is close to impossible to both engage the children in meaningful activities AND have eyes on every child every second.

Not making excuses if you really do feel that they arent doing their job...just sharing that it isnt always quite so simple. And if you do really think the teachers are at fault, or that this is happening frequently and not being seen, I would pull my kid and report in a heartbeat, for all the reasons I mentioned in my previous comment.

@Mamaof2: when I say attacking, I mean unprovoked biting and scratching my daughters face. This is what her face looked like when I picked her up last time. Notice that the scratches are in all different directions (and not a fist grabbing pattern either) and there is a bite mark on the lower left section of her cheek. This was NOT a quick attack. And the teachers "didn't see it" happen. I am haunted by how long she must have been getting attacked before her teachers intervened.

I would be concerned that the Director isn't taking any action.

A parent reported a teacher at our DCP and they monitored her and caught her in the act - she was immediately fired - as she should have been.

I would also be concerned that a single child is physically harming other kids and nothing is being done - When you say "attacking" what does that mean? I wonder if this child's parents are even aware this is happening?

I would report it anonymously. However, I also wouldn't be comfortable sending my child to a center where any staff member was incompetent and the director allowed for it to continue, regardless of how great the staff in my child's class were.

I think as parents, we owe it to other parents to look out for each other. By not reporting it, you're putting other children at risk. Personally, I couldn't live with myself if something happened to another child when I could have done something to try to prevent it.

@mediagirl: Several other children have been hurt, but right now this little girl seems to be focusing her claws and teeth on my dd.

My biggest problem with it is that the teachers "didn't see" 3 of the 4 attacks. I am also very concerned about the possibility of her current injuries leaving scars on her face.

@MrsMed: We aren't looking for a new daycare unless this other setting doesn't work. The daycare has excellent facilities but the staff is hit or miss. We are hoping the other toddler room teachers are more competent.
