We love our Casper mattress. I had no idea how to buy a mattress and liked them for the easy returns and that they are made in the USA.

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: we jus t went through this! The new trend in mattresses is the internet companies (tuft and needle, saavta, Casper, etc.). They don't have brick and mortar stores so they are much less expensive. And most of them have a long risk free trial period (100 days). I'd research them. We got a saavta and love it! We have friends with the tuft and needle and they are loving it as well.

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: We just went to the store and knew we didn't want to spend over a certain number, so we laid on the ones in our price range and bought it.

I was also 35 weeks pregnant and threw a hissy fit when I woke up with the imprint of a spring in my hip. So I got what I wanted.

We just did it the old-fashioned way, ha. We wound up getting it from Macy's, and spent a good hour at least lying on each one and trying it out. We knew for the most part that we both preferred something a bit softer (based on hotel stays and sleeping in other people's guest rooms). We've had it for four months now and I still love it.

Most places will have some sort of trial period for a new mattress--90 days or so. My local furniture store has a clearance section full of mattresses that were obviously returned after the trial period (then sold at a deep discount--$3500 mattresses sold for $1000)--it might be worth seeing if you have something similar in your area.

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: I went to a mattress store and laid on all of them! Wrote down what I liked and then ordered it online for way less.

Also check this out -

I picked a 6 and DH wanted a 1 - we went with a 4 and I love it! I always thought I wanted a soft mattress but turns out my back prefers a firm!

I hear really good things about Casper too!

DH & I both grew up sleeping on firm mattresses, so we just kinda laid on a couple and picked a middle of the road brand.

@regberadaisy: Honestly, prior to marriage my parents just bought mattresses from wherever was cheapest - such as Sam's Club or Costco or similar - when it was time to replace them. When I married my husband he already had a mattress for his bed so this is my first "I have an opinion" on my matress.

@Happygal: I will check them out, thank you! And thanks for the tip about the name change.

@looch: I want one but know it isn't in our budget :(

It is so hard! This is because a company like Sealy will make one mattress and sell it under different names to different stores. So the Sleep Dream is the same as the Sleep Queen, Sleep Beauty, etc., and each shop will say they have the exclusive rights to that mattress.

There is a website called Sleep Like the Dead that has lots of reviews. I have a few friends who have gone with the beds who order and are happy with them.

When we replace our mattress, we think we're going to get a sleep number. It has two sides that you can adjust to the firmness level you like.

I mean, you've slept on more than one mattress, right? We have a mattress that's borders on firm but leaning towards soft. It's perfect for me but kills DH's back when he has back problems. He will sometimes sleep on the carpet family room floor if his back is killing him. He needs extra firm. But if I sleep on the family room floor with him my back is killing me the next day.

TBH we desperately need a new mattress but it's just not in the budget. When we do it will be some kind of sleep number so that we can each have our own softness/firmness zone.

This feels silly to ask but how do you research mattresses? We're finally upgrading our mattress but besides walking into a mattres store and testing models, how do you choose? How do you know if you like a softer mattress or a firmer matress for sleeping on? And what if it kills your back after you take it home after purchase?
