@redsmarties: Vaccinations? I would check with the Ped about what they think is best before going to a destination like Cuba

Thanks for all of the great advice! Bumping for the daytime crowd!
@sarac: We're Canadians ;). Not much of a political protest, just a cheap hot spot to visit.
@wheres_c: A tent! Brilliant. Going to check Amazon now ;)
@yoursilverlining: Didn't even think to check if the resort would have a stroller. That's good to check!

@wheres_c: that's great, I just prefer not to chance it. I have flown a lot of oversold flights lately, so my point was just if you want to be sure your child and seat has a place to sit, buy a seat.

People have varying opinions on the safety of lap children and checked seats.

A trip to Cuba, how fun! Baby's first political protest. You'll want some sort of super sized sun protection for a baby that young - a BIG umbrella, or maybe a small shade tent. Also, a baby that age may be some what mobile, and will be deeply interested in putting sand in their mouth. So, a really big blanket (a sheet?) to cover the sand might be called for.

If you're nursing, expect to do that far more in the hot sun. Not sure about staying extra hydrated with formula - can you just give more? At 6 months, you probably don't want to give a ton of water, if any.

@looch: @yoursilverlining: AA has always blocked an empty seat for me, despite the fact that they aren't obligated to...I guess a big smile and some airline terminology goes a long way. I check expertflyer.com and try to book flights than don't have much chance of selling out.

On one flight there were zero empty seats and we just had to check the seat at the gate....no biggie.

I felt like a stroller was a must, because although I can wear baby for hours at a time, I needed a place for all the stuff. @yoursilverlining makes a good point, the resort probably has one to borrow which would be way easier!

I agree with Looch re: airplane and seating. We've flown a lot, and only one time (out of almost 15 flights) were there any extra seats on the plane at all. We were not allowed to bring the car seat onto the plane unless it had its own ticketed seat.

For the plane, nurse/bottle/paci at takeoff and landing helped LO a lot. 6 months is a great age to travel with because they sleep more and are not mobile!

I personally wouldn't bring a stroller; I've had no trouble wearing LO, even for hours at a time.

I'd also call the resort and see if they keep anything for babies on hand (like spare strollers, beach tents, etc.).

If you buy a sun hat for LO, make sure it has a strap that goes under their chin so it doesn't just blow off :)

Have fun!

If you are flying and you want to guarantee your kid a place to sit, buy a seat. Otherwise it is a crapshoot if you will have a seat at all of the plane for your car seat. The airline is not obligated to even put the car seat in an empty seat near you, it can literally be anywhere.
Bring baby powder, it helps get the sand off.
At 6 months, they're not mobile yet, so it is the best time to travel with them.

Flying at 6 months should be easy!
At check in, request them to block an empty seat next to you...you can put the car seat into the airline seat and then baby can have a place to sleep. If you're lucky, the engine noise and vibrations will keep them sleeping all through the flight.
Pack way more formula (if applicable) than needed.....the ready to feed works best for flying.
At 6mo, I would try and get away with taking infant car seat plus snap and go stroller frame. Also a soft sided carrier.
We have a cheap light pop up baby tent we use at the beach....it's just big enough for LO.
We use that with a tiny inflatable pool to keep LO cool.
Buy swimwear with built in UV protection.
I love the California baby sunblock.
At 6mo, I would keep your LO hydrated with water.....check with your ped, but we introduced it around then.

My MIL and her boyfriend are taking DH, K and I on a vacation in the new year! We are SO excited - I think we're headed to Cuba, to an all-inclusive resort.

That being said...HELP! LO will be 6 months old at time of travel, and I am CLUELESS about bringing her along. Tell me about flying with babies, travelling with babies, being at the beach with babies! What about a carseat? Stroller? Sunscreen? Staying hydrated?

Any advice is wonderful!
