I have also found Al-Anon very helpful in learning to manage my own behavior and feelings in response to a family member's alcohol abuse. If meetings are not currently being held in your area, you may be able to find Facebook groups. There is also a lot of Al-Anon literature, much of which is divided into very short personal narratives (like individual shares would be at a meeting), so your mom may benefit from checking out one or two to see if anything resonates for her. My local library has several, and so does Amazon.

Great advice above. My brother-in-law was an alcoholic and my husband really had a hard time with this, as did his father even more so. Our story didn't have a happy ending, which is really difficult. My husband went to al-anon for awhile back when it was all starting and I know he found it helpful. I know what a tough situation it is to be in. I'm so sorry!

My Mom very much struggled with boundaries and not being able to "fix" my brother's substance abuse. She was very much the enabler and, though she'd never admit it, allowed the abuse to continue much longer than it could have if he had no support.
I'd encourage her to try Al-anon as Meadow mentioned. Al-anon is a group for families of alcoholics and they can help her learn how to set limits and educate her on local resources to help your family member. It may be more effective for her to hear that she cannot fix the problem from someone who is not you. Of course this is all complicated by COVID, but maybe they are having virtual meetings.
Or a one on one therapist who can help your parents with boundaries and working through feelings of guilt on not continuing to provide the enabling support.

A family member's alcoholism is really taking its toll on my parents. My mom especially keeps asking me what more they can do, even though I keep saying that they have already done so much and that if someone isn't willing to get help things won't change with the alcoholic.

Can anyone recommend resources (articles, books, etc.) that might be useful to them? It's heartbreaking to see the stress they're under.
