I liked Happiest Toddler on the Block! Also, we have Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood, haven't finished reading it yet but it seems great too.

Too funny, I was just looking at toddler discipline stuff this morning! In NZ, all new Mums are given a resource book called "Thriving Under Five" that contains all sorts of info on feeding, sleeping, activities etc and here's what it said in terms of dealing with tantrums and behaviour...

- Anticipate their needs (hunger, tiredness, boredom etc)
- Praise good behaviour, try to ignore or distract from undesirable behaviour
- Try to avoid saying "no" and give them positive redirection instead (Eg rather than telling lo to stop yelling, ask them to try whispering)
- Be realistic about what they can or can't do - toddlers aren't made for sitting still or being quiet :-)

As far as I understand, LO's at this age can start to understand boundaries and rules but don't really have the impulse control or neural pathways to actively respect those boundaries, they also have short memories!

@mrbee: She seems to have abandoned her she-devilish ways these days and has been fun (except when she wants the ipad/tv, which she got too much of when on the airplane ride home). Honestly, i'm grateful for the little tips on the boards and your posts i read when LO was an infant! Uh-oh, i guess i'll have to wait for your post to hear what's up with Charlie!

@Freckles: Ah that's nice to hear! Haha Charlie got a lot better, so we didn't need as many management techniques for a while. But things have gotten a lot worse lately so I'm sure I'll be blogging about this again soon!

I agree with baby sign! I don't really think disciplining works or is appropriate at this age but signing has helped us a lot with more and done. I'm not sure about the yelling! Is it just exuberance? Or is he mad about something in the store? We haven't had this happen yet. I feel like leaving the store would be a reward almost?? I need to think through what we will do I guess!
@mrskc: I do a lot of "I'm sorry you're frustrated you can't have X, how about we play with Y" and "that's not for gabe, that's mamas/dogs/dadas". He still points and wants things that aren't his but the repetition seems to be helping. After redirecting and giving him his own toys 500million times, he will now leave the dogs water and food alone 95% of the time.

@mrskc: I hate to say this, but my 2 1/2 (closer to 3) year old still does this. He will just whine and cry about something he can't have. Good Luck! There is a lot of distraction (bribery) in my life.

following. Trying to figure out this whole make my 15 month old listen to me! I think I need to teach him to sign. That would probably help. Right now he points at things he wants and I don't know how to handle when he gets upset when I won't let him have something. I pretty much ignore him when he does that. And he laughs at me when I tell him no!

This is great too: http://www.amazon.ca/How-Talk-Kids-Will-Listen/dp/1451663889 It doesn't necessarily address disciplining but how to approach certain situations. It has been a great tool, along with Karp's book that @littlek mentioned.

They usually know they're breaking the rules around his age. For instance, at that age LO loooved putting her foot on the table and it made me really upset. I would sharply tell her no, i would ask her nicely, i even flicked her heel (lightly). Finally i just ignored her and she put her foot away after 1 second. It took me 3 months of warring with her to figure that out!

When you say, "shh don't yell" do you say it in a loud voice or a quiet voice? I know what worked for me is when i lowered my voice to the sound level i wanted her voice at, but honestly it took a while for her to figure it out. In fact, she would start yelling after i tell her to quiet down. :silly:

In general, consistency and repetition helped. Sorry, i just realized you were looking for resources and i wrote a novel. :P

I am looking for books on how to train the behavior of a young toddler. So far i've found that most books are too specialized for me. I don't follow the whole attachment parenting style but I am not into spanking either (especially a toddler who can not yet verbalize anything).

I basically want to know a few things from these books:
-at what age is my child knowingly breaking the rules versus just unknowingly making mistakes (eg: throwing food from highchair)
- in what way(s) can I get my child to learn right from wrong (eg: do not tip your milk cup over when done. Just say "done")
-how much does my child comprehend when told "no" (eg: He will get mad and yell in a store and when I say "shh, don't yell" he will not stop. I don't know if this is because he doesn't know what i'm asking for or if he is blatantly disobeying)

Anyone who says terrible 2s start at 2 is wrong:) In our case, it is sprouting at the age of 15m :)
