I would definitely look into any alumni resources. Sometimes the best thing for finding a job is networking! I know my university has a career website where alums can sign up to be listed with their contact info and job title so they can be resources for other alums. When I was looking for jobs, I reached out to people in the jobs that interested me to get advice. And eventually, a fellow grad from my university helped get me a job by passing on my resume. Do you know if you have anything like that available?

@luckypenny: I think you may not even need a great resume for that type of work, especially if you are looking for entry-level work. I would just have a resume with your college info, contact, skills, etc.

While I was in college, I started working at a wedding venue in the catering department. The wedding coordinator quit about a week after I started, and because I was the only female in the catering department, I got to take over all the duties--with 0 experience.

Hmmm, this type of thing is totally out of my area of expertise, I just thought of something, might be worth a try...when I got married, there was a wedding coordinator available via my venue (a restuaurant). So it might be another avenue for you to try in terms of applying to places. She coordinated everything for me, handled the food, making sure there was enough waitstaff etc. Could be a starting point.

@MrsKoala: I'm totally open for entry level - intern, studio assistant, just being there to assist on the day for set up, whatever ... Thats actually what I'm looking for but I can't do it full time unpaid. Unfortunately, all the internships I've seen are for "college credit"

Can you look into the possibility of interning for a little while or assisting a wedding/event planner to get some solid experience? You can always ask for an informational interview to get an idea of what they are looking for on a resume.

@luckypenny: Maybe you can swing the marketing angle with wedding/event planning companies? I'm really not sure. I have friends who do corporate event planning (think big meetings and such) who have business backgrounds and MBAs, so....there are certificates out there you can achieve if you're interested.

@blackbird: @looch: @wheres_c: I went to fashion school ( merchandising / marketing ) and want to do wedding/event planning. So similar? I graduated 4 years ago. I definitely am not looking to start at the top but I need something to just cover childcare which might be hard :(

@T.H.O.U.: definitely have been working on my cover letter. I just wasn't sure if I should include my time off in that. I mean there are definitely skills I've acquired as a SAHM (for instance I now have the patience of a saint!) lol

@teawithpaloma: great tip!

What about an experiential resume? It focuses less on timelines but more on overall experiences. Then - when you are in the first round you can just explain you took a break to raise your family. One ohter suggestion, is you never know if the hiring manager is a mom you kept working so avoid saying anything like "i just couldn't leave my kids with a stranger..." or anything of the like.

What is your field? How long ago did you graduate? I would follow a similar template for a "new graduate" and market yourself as such. If anyone asks about gaps, explain that you were at home with your child

ETA - Since you may not have a full resume, maybe focus more time on a really good cover letter thats custom for each job you're applying to.

Good job!

Can you think of other activities that you could list? Volunteering? Participating in a group?

Other than that maybe think about a college project that you could highlight and describe?

Yay for you!!!! I have no input on the resume, but I am excited for your new journey :)

What'd you go to school for?

eta: does your university offer career fairs? That's how i got my foot in the door. You're basically a "new grad" just....not 22 :)

After three years of being a SAHM, I've decided to go back to work! I'm excited and feel good about the change but I just realized I'm also really insecure and nervous.

I got pregnant with DD1 right after college so I have no work experience, except some retail while in school. I have nothing to put on a resume :( How do you deal with that time gap on a resume when there wasn't much more before SAH ?
