@illumina: Oh yea, I work in Oil & Gas. I'm going back in July, but on my current salary we really just can't afford life. So, I want to put my resume out to a few bigger companies to see if I can get a better paying job. I'm a little sad about it because my current job is quite cushy and I have a really nice set up, but I just don't think they can afford me and I can't afford to stay there. womp womp. I'll definitely try to negotiate with them before moving onto something else, I just wanted my resume up to date so I can get a few interviews and see what else is out there! :D

@pregnantbee: hey no worries, the thought is super appreciated! :)

@swedishfish: Thanks! That's actually a great idea.

@.twist.: Before I finished my most recent certification, I listed it on my resume as "expected completion date: May 2012". And that date changed a few times!

@pregnantbee: I shouldn't need an employment help centre. My industry is incredibly social and network based. I just needed a few pointers to perfect my resume! :)

@illumina: haha thanks. I was unsure about the # of jobs, because if I don't include any other history than my present job, it's all I have listed under employment. Is that going to look bad?

I would....

1. Include it under the education & qualifications section...put it at the top and list which parts you've completed. If you are actively working towards the other parts, list them and say you are.

2. Only list the previous employments that are relevant to the job you are applying for.

3. Available on request. I wouldn't want a potential employer contacting my current boss until they've offered me the job.

LOL at cover letter! ;)

Good luck!!

@Pepper: I should probably look into signing up for the courses. I just don't know if I can afford it right now! :/

Cover letter!? eeeeek. I need to go look for a template of a cover letter. lolz.

Also, don't forget you can really sell yourself on the cover letter! Cover letters are great for mentioning qualities about yourself that you can't really put on a formal resume. For instance, mentioning how dedicated you are, which shows through your long work history with your previous employer. :)

@.twist.: Do you think you'll complete them online? It would be a shame to not mention the courses, but an employer might wonder why you didn't finish, and even with an excellent reason, they may still unfortunately take that as a negative thing.

I have a similar situation... I have 4 classes left to get my MBA. I quit when I was TTC because my heart wasn't in it. If I was applying to a job where an MBA would make or break my chances, I would look into going back. Even if I did one course a semester, I could list it on my resume without lying and better myself at the same time. I guess it all depends on how easily you can finish it!

And I would definitely list high school :) if you had good grades I'd list your class rank or GPA, too. Anything to make you look like the best candidate!

@Pepper: Thank you, thank you!

So, my schooling is a little funny. I was in the course, and completed 4 out of 6 courses to complete the certificate. The last two courses have been put on a back burner because I moved far away from the school before they offered online programs, and i got married, yadda, yadda. I would LOVE to finish the course, although it seems to have changed slightly since I did them back in 07/08. So, yea, I'm not sure what to do about it, but the actual courses/certificate are incredibly helpful on my resume because they apply directly to my job.

It makes me a little nervous that I haven't completed the course because other than those 4/6 courses I have only graduated high school (do i put that on? lol). So, my only REAL asset here is that I have 8 years experience, in one job, in ALL fields of my job. So, that is great, but lacking the schooling could really hinder me... even though most people have the schooling and only a few years of experience in ONE field of my job!

@.twist.: I will try to help! I love going over resumes.

For education, does the template have a place for the completion date of the degree? If so, I'd list your expected certificate or degree and put "expected month year" That's what I always did for my degree when I was still actively in school. The only time I wouldn't mention education is if you dropped out with no plans to complete the program.

I only list work experience that is at least somewhat relevant to the job I'm applying for. I think 8 years of work experience is excellent, and being at the same company shows that you are dedicated and not quitting right and left. If none of your past jobs help you look better as an employee, I'd just list the one. ETA: if your resume ends up looking bare, maybe find some activity or responsibility at a prior job that would make you look like an asset, and list that job. I've done that with part time jobs where I've had a management role.

I'm not on linked in so I can't comment there :)

I've had people tell me not to even bother writing references available upon request because it's a given that you'll need to provide references. Usually you'll list them on the actual job application. If you are submitting a resume without applying, it won't hurt to include the "upon request" line at the bottom. I wouldn't actually list them on the resume, it often makes it look jumbled and not as easy on the eyes.

Hi all, I'd love for some help with my resume. I have never had to use one before so I'm kind of a noob!

I grabbed a template off google and have filled in most of the sections, I just have a few questions to complete it.

1. I have MOST courses in a certificate program completed, but I haven't finished the courses needed to get my certificate. How should I put this info on my resume?

2. Should I be listing all my employment? I have worked at the same job for 8 years and it's the only job I've had in this field. All my other work was kid stuff, like stuff papers at a printer press, hair stylist assistant, personal assistant to a bar owner, etc.

3. Should I be using linked in?

Thanks for all your help. :)

ETA: 3. should I have references listed or "available upon request"?
