Thanks! Sent her back on Tuesday and she was fine. It looked like her mouth sores were gone, and all the others had totally cleared up.

DD1 - had HFM at 1 year old. She spiked a bad fever, then rash the day after two small sores appeared near her mouth. She was not allowed to return until her sores scabbed and her fever was gone. All in all it was a weekend plus three days of school.

DD2 - She had HFM (or a sister virus I think the Ped said), it was only in her mouth (two bad sores). She was out a full week...with both weekends 'contagious'. She had to wait until the sores in her mouth was healed. Otherwise if she chewed on a toy, drooled, licked, kissed, etc anyone it was contagious still.

HFM sucks...so sorry you are going through it!

Fever free and scabbed over. Like you said, mouth sores are hard to judge. Based on what you described I would send her back.

DD didn't miss a single day of daycare because she never spiked a fever. Nobody said anything about the sores, other than that the whole class had them and that by the time they appeared everyone had already been exposed so there wasn't much point in trying to stop the spread.

The mouth sores are what stand out to me ... I was told that kids are still contagious until the scabs are noticeably healing. Definitely a few days past the fever (crazy your LO didn't have a fever - ours had a 105° fever). HFM is the worst!!

We had a fairly mild case of HFM, no mouth sores. Our doctor basically said it is so contagious that as long as there was no fever and the sores were scabbed over he could go back. Our doctor said that is why daycare policies are vague since it was most likely caught there and that once one has it, it is hard to contain. We ended up keeping him home for about a week.

@gingerbebe: @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Thanks, ladies. What about mouth sores? I'm curious because it doesn't seem like they can really scab over. If your little ones had them in their mouths, had they totally healed and were gone by the time they returned? I appreciate the help.

No fever is a given, but as long as the sores have scabbed over and there's no chance of the sores opening or weeping you should be fine.

If your LO had Hand, Foot, and Mouth, at what point did they return to daycare? I ask because LO's daycare policy isn't totally clear on their site, and with the holiday weekend, they're not getting back to me (neither is her doctor). Even the CDC doesn't have helpful info on this on their website.

She has 1-2 sores in her mouth that are healing. The rest of her bumps have either scabbed over (sorry, gross, I know) or have never opened. She never spiked a fever. It's been just about a week since she got sick.

DH and I both have major commitments at work this week and our back-up babysitters aren't available. Obviously we'll call out if we have to, but IF she's okay to go I'd rather send her. I'm curious to hear what others have done.
