I could remember wrong, but I think I was cleared and could still use sick leave. I think it counted as sick leave caring for someone (not for myself).

@FLnative12: I was cleared, but I have many friends who have utilized the system and gotten notes off work for longer (so they could use their sick leave longer). I mean, all of them had real issues, but they made a point to make a big deal out of it to their doctor. One broke her tail bone during labor and said she was still having issues doing normal stuff, one had nerve damage in her hand from the pregnancy that was still not cleared up and was having a lot of appointments with different doctors about that. And more than a few have had PPA or PPD and mental health is also a reason to have the sick leave extended.

Stitches not healing, infections, severe breastfeeding issues (like bloody scabby nipples), any residual pain from a C-section...all of those are issues you can and should bring up to your doctor.

My doctor told me after the fact that all a woman in his office has to do is mention PPA or PPD and he will write her a note for however long he can. He has 4 kids and is super pro maternity leave. My work only wanted to give me 4 weeks and he wrote a super long detailed note about how at 4 weeks, my stitches aren't totally healed, my uturus is not back to normal size, I may be experiencing incontinence, I'm still bleeding, my nipples have been traumatized, and I'm chronically sleep deprived and that he couldn't in good conscious send me to work (theoretically) at 4 weeks pp. All of that was 100% true, btw.

Has anyone NOT been cleared to return to work at 6 weeks (or 8 weeks for a C Section)? If so, do you mind sharing how that conversation went with your Dr and what the reasons were?

I am on Mat leave with a return to work date of 12/19. If I get clearance to return to work at my 6 week appointment (later this week) I still stay home until 12/19 as planned, but I can't use any more of my sick pay because at that point I am no longer on leave for a medical reason, I am just using FMLA. It would then be a combo of vacation/unpaid time - even though I technically have additional paid sick time.

I have a couple of lingering physical issues from labor/delivery, but they are minor and I am not sure how comfortable I am making an issue out of them. At the same time - some more paid time would be nice.

Just trying to think it through before my appointment and any experience/perspective is appreciated.

Thank you!
