This is good to know. LO's daycare friend got it. Most of the kids got fevers, but don't know about the rash. LO got a fever on Friday, but has been better today and yesterday. I'm still worried about him developing a rash.

@SeptMomma12: Oh, poor baby, poor mama :(

E got it over Mother's Day weekend (I picked him up with a fever the Friday before) and his teacher's told me that their policy is that he can come in as long as he's been fever free for 24 hours, because normally by the time the fever spikes they'll have passed being contagious.

Just to update, we ended up keeping LO out of school all week. He probably could have gone back by Thursday (got sick on Saturday), but we decided to just keep him out for the rest of the week at that point. He definitely had a really severe case though - it was brutal. Almost 4 weeks later and he still has red spots from the blisters

@autumnlove: Will cross my fingers for you! All of the other kids in LO's class were back within a few days. He just got a really bad case.

@SeptMomma12: That was my train of thought exactly! The doctor said 24 hours but I would flip the eff out if I saw a kid with red angry blisters at daycare.

@SeptMomma12: thanks for saying that. That was our fear. It sucks using PTO and paying for daycare you're not using. but I would hate for my LO to be the cause of another child getting HFM. It's brutal!
Just recently LO may or may not have gotten it again and we opted to keep her home again. Just to be safe.

My LO's never crusted over but yes, that's a good sign.

Thanks ladies. He definitely can't go back right now - I would freak out if I saw another kid in his class looking like he does - but just trying to guess how long he might be out. We seem to have gotten lucky and avoided the really high fever but this rash is brutal

Did your LOs blisters crust over before they got better? I feel like some of them are starting to get "crusty" and hoping that's a good sign.

Ours just required 24 hours fever free.

Our daycare required her rash to no longer be red. I think we kept out a total of 5 days. We were fortunate that 2 days were the weekend.

@Corduroy: Ditto! We pretty much kept LO home for that entire week because of his blisters. They just looked so awful!

Our doctor said we were only required to keep her out 24 hours after the fever but if we could swing it we should keep her out until she stops getting new blisters. That was about a week. Three weeks later she still has spots so we definitely couldn't have waited until there was nothing.

For ours, they need to be fever free for 24 hours and the blisters need to start to subsidy. I found it hard to interpret the second part. I think the fever is the most important part. Hope your LO is feeling better!

Ours requires a doctors note with the day that LO is not contagious any more in writing.

LO had hand, foot and mouth disease (coxsackie) over the weekend. He got a fever on Saturday morning, followed by the rash on Saturday afternoon/night. Daycare is closed today, so I can't find out what their policy is for kids returning from HFM. He hasn't had a fever since Saturday morning, but I have a feeling his skin may be red for a while. Does anyone know how it works at your daycare? Do they just need to be fever free for 24 hours or does their skin need to clear up completely?
