How unprofessional, though!

even if it were true, i can't imagine why those coworkers would feel the need to tell you that! that's incredible insensitive. what did they expect you to do with that information? i would probably assume that it was not completely truthful and go about my business. if you suspect your manager is capable of something like that, i might start looking for new work because it doesn't sound like the most positive environment.

If you're completely sure that that's what he said, then I'd be doing a little job searching. I was in a situation where I found out my manager was searching for someone new because we didn't get along very well (though I don't know the real story, I never asked), and it turned out better for me in the long run that I quit first.

@Mamimami: you are so right! If health insurance wouldn't cost more than our mortgage, I'd leave in a heartbeat.

Thank you, everyone for the advice. I'll try to hold my head up high and do my job. I just feel like there's a target on my back. Last time I went on maternity leave with LO 1, they took my office away (after 13 years) and I had to share an office with someone. I'm working in corporate America and I feel like it's not much different than the elementary school playground things we had to deal with when we were little.

Try to forget it, consider talking less to those gossipy people, and hold your head up high for your LOs! You're working for them, right? :)

I'm sorry, that's an awful thing to hear!

I want to play devil's advocate a little though, since you didn't hear it from your boss's mouth yourself, try to take it with a grain of salt. You don't know exactly what was said, it could have been a compliment paid to the person filling in for you that was taken too far, or it could be a coworker saying something that they really shouldn't.

Having said that, go to work, hold your head up high and do a great job to prove them all wrong!

I would be so upset! I would go back and work my ass off so they could see it was pregnancy related.

who knows what your boss actually said (although if it's true that's very inappropriate), so i agree with the others that you just go back and do the best that you do. i'm really sorry you have to deal with that stress though.

aw, that is shocking and disheartening to hear. i would go back to work and have a chat with your boss on Monday and talk about what you've heard. maybe you can start with, "how was the temp doing while i was out?" and if your boss doesn't mention it, i think you can bring it up and say you heard...not from whom, but just that you know what was said and that you'd like to make sure you start off on the right foot after coming back from leave. then go into a conversation about expectations and how you can better meet them. i think it should reflect well on you that you took the initiative to bring it up.

I would just go back and do the very best I could. Sometimes things are just rumors and really get blown out of proportion when people tell stories so I would take it with a grain of salt as well.

Yikes! That is awful

I would probably just jump back into work and prove her wrong.
I don't think I would have the guts to confront her, would you feel ok doing that?

i am scheduled to return to work on Monday after having LO #2. While I was out on maternity leave, I brought my kids into the office so my coworkers can see them. While I was there, I was told by a couple of people that my boss told 2 of my coworkers and the person that was filling in for me while I was on maternity leave that she thinks that that person's quality and speed of work is better than mine. So many emotions have been running through me since I've heard what was said. Mostly, I'm furious that a superior would say something like this (I can understand if it was a coworker... but this person is a manager!) How do I hold my head up high when I return to work knowing this is what's been said about my character? Has this happened to anyone? How should I handle this?
