When lo wasn't walking i just did the swim diaper and a rash guard. His second summer I did a bathing suit over the swim diaper, also with a rash guard.

With baby girl I will probably do the same the first year. The second year I doubt I will use a real bathing suit...The thought of having to take a wet one piece bathing suit off to be able to change a diaper on a toddler sounds like...not fun at all. I am personally not a fan of "bikini" type bathing suits on babies/toddlers.

ETA: we use applecheeks swim diapers as well. Lo used the same ones for two years (they have multiple snap settings, and they still fit the second year). They are still in great shape and will use them for baby girl too. LO1 is still small enough that he may actually fit in them for one more summer as well (he will be 2.5 and not potty trained yet).

I think for just the weekend getaway, you'll be fine with just reusable swim diapers. We used the applecheeks ones and I liked that they snapped especially after we had a poop incident last summer with an honest reusable one that pulled up. Not fun. Lol

My son just used a swim diaper all summer but we were always using a private pool. I think for lessons I would do swim trunks and maybe rash guard and a suit for DD.

We've been using reusable swim diapers since 6 months and it's super easy. We had plain white ones that we put a swim suit over and then a ruffled one that we just used a rash guard with.

I put swimsuits over the diaper, but mainly because we had so many swimsuits and I felt the need to use them. LO had 7 swimsuits her first summer and all but 1 were gifts or hand me downs. If we had an indoor pool, I would have just done the diaper.

Last year, I used the reusable swim diapers and put a rash guard over top of it. Her diapers were cute though, I got a Bummis Bubble diaper and the other one was white. Do you have a cloth diaper store near you? They should have a decent selection of reusable diapers. And if they poop, all you have to do is flush it and then I wash the diaper in the sink (I take a small amount of detergent with me).

@twodoghouse: We only used the reusable for swim lessons. Disposable were just easier but she only pooped once in one, for DH, all summer. But she was over 1 yr so she pretty much only pooped once a day.

@Smurfette: Oh good point. I'm not sure what their rules are yet for the actual lessons at the pool. Maybe I'll see if the friends I'm going with want to split the pack. There will be 4 babies there and I think they are all in the same size now. Or maybe I'll just bite the bullet and get the reusable ones. Did R poop while swimming very often?

I love iplay diapers. I do both options - use the diaper with a cute rash guard OR put it under a swimsuit depending on my DD's wardrobe options. I've used the one piece iPlay swimsuit with a built in diaper and would suggest a two piece option in the event of a poop accident. The one piece is kind of hard to get off. Normally I worry about two pieces slipping down on my skinny kids but the iPlays are snug (and I sized down), even on my 5th percentile daughter. Personally I think they are easy to wash if I do it right away, and we only ever had a poo or two anyway.

@twodoghouse: we used the swimdiapers only. Sometimes we put a disposable underneath (if it was required by the pool rules etc).

@illumina: Oh, that makes me wonder if we should try disposables for this first time. I have no idea if they'll end up pooping and that might be hard to deal with in a rented house!

@lamariniere: Oh I definitely won't risk swimming naked! Maybe if it were in the ocean or something, but I don't think the owners would appreciate my kids pooping in their indoor pool!

@Mae: Swim lessons are totally contingent on how they do with this! I think there's a 50% chance they will scream bloody murder in the pool and at least we'll find it out before enroll ing them in lessons, haha.

You can buy delaminated flips that people use as swim dipes and are really cute! And they are cheap. But I don't know if you'd have time to buy any before this weekend. If I were you I'd probably not bother with swimsuits for this one weekend... although if you're pretty sure you're doing swim lessons soon then go for it with the cute suits haha.

We use iplay diapers. I've always just used the swim diaper as the bottoms, usually with a rash guard on top for outdoor swimming. While my LOs have been in diapers I have never bought a real swimsuit, seems pointless to me (but they definitely are cute). I suppose they could swim naked, you just have to watch out for poop!
