I feel like this is no weirder than letting your kid wear the same undies they wore to bed the following day (I know not everyone wears underwear to bed). I’d be way more concerned about the environmental impact of wasting perfectly good diaper.

I always always reused dry diapers and my son never had a problem. I'd like to destroy this planet as little as possible with diapers that take 200 years to biodegrade.

@QBbride: no in the morning. So if she’s dry this morning when she wakes up I’m going to change her pull up into fresh undies for the day and tonight she will get a fresh pull up.

LO is notorious for removing his diaper at bedtime for a “new diaper.” Mind you that can be just 45 minutes after I changed him because of. mid-dinner poop. He’s still wearing a “new diaper!” I put it the clean diaper right back on him!

If he woke up dry I would keep him in the same diaper too since at daycare they will change him in no more than 2 hours after drop off.

@dc yoga bee: like you change her undies during the day?

Ugh I feel so awful. Are we supposed to do this? I’ve never changed my 3yo’s undies except at bedtime when she wears a diaper. I don’t even give her a bath everyday! Probably every 3 days.

@LindsayInNY: i actually just asked the pediatrician about this Monday at DD’s doctor’s appointment because she has complained of itchy privates. Ped said that wearing a pull up or underwear too long can cause yeast infections just like in adults. Even if it’s dry, the body still produces some slight discharge and it won’t be heavy or noticeable in little girls but it’s there. Sometimes you can notice a slight smell to the pull up (which I think you mentioned earlier). We don’t keep dd in the same pull up or undies for all day either! But, let me tell you using monistat on a 3 year old is no fun!

We re-use for up to 24 total hours of wear or so.... basically, he gets the same one for nap and night. When he wakes up, if it's dry, we put it on the bathroom counter, if it's wet, we throw it away. He is dry for most naps but not really night-trained, so it ends up being 24 hours most of the time.

I think of it like underwear.... I'd be ok with the same underwear for 24 continuous hours. Although personally I change mine 2-3 times a day depending on the heat!

@LindsayInNY: two days seem reasonable. My husband often puts her night diaper on and we often forget to wipe. But who knows if it even matters. I’d like to be able to bathe my kids every night, but there just isn’t enough time.

@Mrs. Goose: I don't pay close enough attention to know how often I notice a "smell" or not. I might try wiping down, even on non-poop days. I use a wipe when she poops.

@Foodnerd81: Maybe I just need to limit the reusing to like one night or something.

I do reuse them, though usually I’ll try to use one for nap then overnight and then toss it. But we’ve definitely used one a couple of nights if it’s totally dry. It feels a little icky but also wasteful to toss a perfectly dry diaper.

@LindsayInNY: I have noticed the same thing in my kid sometimes. Same bathing schedule as you and she doesn’t wipe when she pees. Haha. I wipe with a baby wipe after she poops. Sometimes I’ll do a baby wipe before bed. I haven’t noticed a smell in a while, but there definitely have been some days. I attributed it to yeast build up. There was a period of time I did plain yoghurt in her night diaper at my sister’s recommendation. I feel like a bit of pee wouldn’t make you smell funky though.

I don’t reuse her underwear because I’m doing a bunch of laundry anyway and sometimes it gets drops of pee in it and sometimes she farts and it isn’t clean...and it also doesn’t seem socially acceptable! But, I guess there’s also your skin shedding and grease and stuff coming off your skin. Now I feel like I’m thinking about this a lot more in-depth than I did before. I also have thrown away dry diapers before because I thought they weren’t “fresh”. But I would/ do reuse them now even after this thread.

I'm always so tempted to reuse a dry diaper but I don't. My main reasoning is DD is pretty susceptible to yeasty rashes and I just don't want to take a chance on that. It feels like such a waste, but...

I never thought about it b/c no one has woken up completely dry in the morning. I feel like my auto-pilot would throw it out, but if somehow I saved it, I would probably re-use it.....

Okay, this makes me feel better.

@Mrs. Goose: Going off your comment, reason I asked is that I notice a vagina smell from DD every so often. She wipes after peeing (but really that wouldn't cause a smell?), I wipe after she poops... I don't know what would cause it? She bathes twice a week so maybe that? Maybe I should baby wipe clean down there more often?

I was just thinking about this last night. Clean their bum before putting on the diaper and it’s all good. I feel like it’s more gross to us than it actually is. I don’t think 3 year olds have any vaginal discharge which is the only reason plus sweat that I wouldn’t reuse underwear. It makes sense to reuse if totally dry, I think.
