@brownie: thanks - i will check out the gerber dried fruit and veggie melts! I wish I had a dog that can "clean" the high chair and "mob" the floor for me too..

@NYCaliMama: Thank you for the encouragement ! Now I am less worried about the iron levels...

@LivsMama: I know! there had never been iron-fortified cereals when I grew up! Why do they make it such a big fuss nowadays and having handouts saying they must eat 3-9 tbs of iron-fortified cereal by xx months. To me that's very absurd...

In terms of BLW - it is not like I don't let him pick up his food. I tried giving him puree in those infant self-feeders - he'd smack the thing on the tray while puree flew EVERYWHERE. Then he'd use his other hand to squeeze the "head" of the feeder so puree just came out and he smooshed it with his hands! I gave him pieces of banana he'd squash it with his hands. So far the least messy is cheerios but also they'd drop everywhere. Many times he just made a mess and barely ate anything. Spoon fed at least I can make sure he ate something while avoid his hands when he tries to grab the spoon. But you are right it can get messier than self feeding in some ways... but at least it is only on him, not everywhere else in the house!

@baby98765: @sarac: I suspect it has something to do with teething too because he also had nursing strike last week. He seemed to have "stablized" from nursing strike and he ate a bit better today. Knock on wood!

Teething! And a desire to self feed. And just general baby rudeness - my toddler hadn't been eating much the last few weeks, due to teething. Last night she ate an entire peach and an entire chicken breast for dinner. It'll be up and down for years.

My guy has been through several 'regressions' with eating and they always happen when he is teething.

@irene: My doctor said to not worry about iron deficiency. If you are really concerned with it, offer LO cooked red meats, or have your pedi do a test earlier than normal. Kids got a long fine without iron fortified cereals for thousands of years. You dont have to worry about it too much. We too are mostly grain free, so we never did any cereals. We also embraced the mess and learned that BLW actually provided us with a lot LESS mess than purees did since it was small chunks of finger food. It sounds like you arent a fan of messes, but truthfully with solids, you kind of have to deal with it. Even when they are spoon fed by hand, messes are going to come. And there will come a point where LO gets sick of you feeding him and he will want to do it himself. You just have to go with it

Heck yes I have been there... Months 8-10 DD #2 was horrible with purees/solids. Horrible. Totally stressed me out. All babies her age were doing wonderfully with food and I felt terrible about it because no matter what I tried, she just didn't seem to like anything but breastmilk. It was so tough. It came to the point that I thought she had sensory problems with spoons or anything else in her mouth but my boob (she rejected bottles too). Her weight was also stalled... Her ped was concerned and I saw LC's and just kept trying to be aggressive with feeding.

It was two months of stress.... But you know what, at Month 9 she sprouted 2 teeth and it got a little better. Two weeks later, top 2 teeth. We started BLW around 8.5 months btw and it helped somewhat. So basically, she got 4 teeth in the span of 1-2 months and around Month 10 she was finally taking more table food and gaining better. It was a phase, but a long and stressful one.

My advice to you is to not give up on offering solids, trying different things and feeding strategies... Perfectly fine too if he seems to want more breastmilk at this point.

I was very worried about her iron levels too and they checked it at Month 9... I was relieved they were fine even despite her poor appetite. Definitely ask your ped to check it earlier than usually scheduled if you are concerned. Good luck!

@irene: Gerber makes fruit and veggie melts we just buy them from the store. They are freeze dried purée. They melt in the mouth so there is less choking hazard. We also like the puffs and we would buy freeze dried fruit and have him eat it. All melted away so we worried less about choking,

As for blw and the mess, we embraced the mess. We are a mostly grain free family so we never did the cereals. One of his first meals was meat. He had blood testing done and had no iron deficiency (at 9 months). His tray hoses off, he gets a bath and the dogs get the floor (and chair). It wasn't a major deal for us.

We couldn't make food an issue because he had Weight gain issues and he had to eat. We would give him some melts (or other food) and spoon feed him on top of that. It gave him some control but also got him eating.

@LivsMama: You are not worry about the iron-deficiency problem? The reason why I am still stuck with cereals is because they are "iron fortified". Spoon feeding is also one of the easier ways to make sure he ate... if we let him feed himself he'd probably sit there the whole day while we'll be picking up around him the whole time.....

@brownie: I'll try the pouches too next week when we go back to grocery... thanks for the suggestion! as far as banana, i offer him the banana that I am eating, and he'd gladly take a huge bite, only to spit the whole thing out afterwards. If we leave it on his tray, he'd smash it in his hands and smear everywhere. Ah! How do you guys stand BLW ???

what is the fruit and veggie melts that you are talking about?

At about 8 months my son wanted to feed himself more. We bought the pouches of purée and that was more successful. You may also want to try some soft foods that he can pick up. Like pieces of banana or bread.

Cheerios were too hard for my guy for a long time. We bought the puffs and the fruit and veggie melts and he loved those.

It very well could be that LO is tired of the same thing. Liv has days where she will eat a TON of pasta or chicken or whatever, but the next day she will turn it down like it repulses her. We skipped purees though and went with a BLW approach. We've not had a regression, but we've had "strikes" of certain foods.

@irene: lol- that is exactly what my LO does. We do BLW (I'm on Mat leave right now so I have the time to let her pick at things) and the one time I put some applesauce in a bowl, it was everywhere in about 17 seconds.

hmm..... maybe I'll try that - but i just don't have a good feeling I think the bowl and spoon would be thrown on the floor and puree flew everywhere for our case....

I have a friend who went throught something similar with her daughter at 8 months. She said she was so frustrated she just dropped the bowl and spoon on her daughters tray and walked away. When she turned around her daughter was feeding herself happily. Just a thought- my LO hasn't gone through something like this yet.

we tried letting him just eat cheerios too but it will take 2 days before he finishes his breakfast.... I just don't have the time.... and the mess just doesn't appeal to me.... and I think he'd even eat less.

I am just dying for him to start eating more solids so I can feel better about starting to pump only 2 times rather than 3 at work.....

Have you tried more of a BLW approach? I do still puree some foods that are harder to eat whole, but now I also let him suck and gnaw on some other foods which is a whole new experience for him! Today he gnawed on a carrot for half an hour, last week it was green pepper strips. He totally loves it!!

He hasn't had a food regression so IDK if that would work for you..

But also, my ped told me that babies don't need extra calories/nutrition from solids until they're a year old so if they don't eat a lot (or at all) don't stress about it. My nephew didn't like food until he just before a year - he would get mad. All he wanted was boob!! It was pretty funny but now, at 13 months, he LOVES food!!

LO is 8 months now. We started solids at 6 months and he went from eating a few bites to finishing 3-3.5 oz of purees at one meal at around 7+ months. And he would still be able to eat 1/3 of a yobaby cup of yogurt. I thought hey, this is the beginning of natural weaning!

However, recently he started "reverting". Starting last week he has been taking in less and less solids.... to a point where he only ate a few bites and started screaming. He would be barely eating 1 oz and started refusing to eat and rubbing his face, with food, allover. He's been going back to drinking more (breast)milk though. (4-5 oz a feed).

He used to love chicken porridge. Nowadays we have to throw them away because he would only take a few bites. Our nanny said maybe he's sick of eating the same food over and over, but I don't really think that's the reason...

Is this normal? Has this happened to you? I just worry he wouldn't be getting enough iron. What would you do?
