@MamaG: We have a Britax convertible and did not use rear facing tethering. It's optional and not required. As for tethering to the floor, not all car manufacturers allow it, so it's definitely an issue of the car seat and car itself both explicitly allowing it to be done that way. I prefer seats with an anti-rebound bar over various tethering options.

@MamaG: several of the new seats have a rebound bar which I think somewhat replaces the tether...I struggled so much with my Britax RF + tether that I switched to a Clek Foonf that has the rebound bar. I never could get her in there with all the belts and everything and it didn't seem as safe without the tether. For what it's worth, the seat that I have now sits so high up that she can see out and thus far she hasn't fought continuing the rear facing...she's 2 1/2 yo. Anyway, hope you figure something out - don't know why they made it so difficult on the Britax seats!

My understanding is that tethering is really only recommended for forward facing car-seats. It has to do with stabilizing the forward movement of the top of the seat (head) in a collision. I had never seen tethers used RF until this thread! I guess I'll be doing some more research on this.

@Foodnerd81: @MamaG: the tether strap loosens off so it's not in the way and I can honestly say that the rf'ing tether has never been a problem for me!

It's worth noting that Australian seats usually have a stabilising bar and have the harness routed slightly differently and they perform differently in the event of a crash (eg straps come from ABOVE the shoulders when rf'ing

@MamaG: I'm no help, because my seat doesn't allow rf tethering and I didn't even realize some did. I do remember reading other in countries it's much more common.

@Lilbear: I agree that it seems "safer" to be tethered. I'm surprised that most seats don't require it. I guess the risk from injury of the seat lifting up toward the rear seat isn't high? I wasn't previously aware that some seats (or really most seats) don't require tethering.

@Kemma: Yes, this! That looks like it would be challenging to get the child in/out of. I'm not sure if part of my challenge is my kids are big. Like at 9 months, she's 25 lbs. I'm not sure I could have squeezed her easily in between the straps and lifting her up over the top at her size also would have been challenging.

@Lilbear: That looks more manageable. The only thing we might need to change is our older child likes to "crawl" through the whole backseat to her side of the car. I wouldn't want her getting caught in the strap down to the floor.

We have a Britax and started off using the RF tether like @lilbear's photo above. I hated it, so I bought the Britax anti-rebound bar. It doesn't get in the way at all - I recommend it if it is compatible with your model.

We have our rf car seats tethered and it doesn't impede getting your kid in/out of the seat at all. Basically, there is a short strap/loop piece that loops around something on the floor (which is bolted to the base of your car) and the tether strap clips into that. We put our loop around the floor track that the front passenger seat is on. (The track where you slide the seat forward or backwards) From what I understand, it's safer to have it tethered while rf, because the seat can tip forward (against the back of the back seat) if it is only secured in the seatbelt/latch area and not tethered. I don't have a picture of this though. Also fwiw we have a britax boulevard and a diono radian - both tethered rear facing.

Wow o had to look up images to understand what you were saying - that's ridiculous! I did see britax is/has phased that out - I don't know if that means old seats that used to require it no longer will require it but you might want to look it up.

@LBee: Thank you for the link.

We have a Britax and our manual has you pull the long straps and tether to the back of the seat (so the straps are extending from the back of the carseat, across the top of the carseat and the space where you would put the child in, and then to the rear of the seat the carseat is sitting in!). Ridiculous!

I now also see that most seats don't have the option, that's certainly interesting.

We have a convertible that allows tethering when RF and it included an extra piece that wraps around the place where the front seat (driver or passenger) is welded to the floor of the car. The LATCH hook then hooks into that piece. It's hard to describe, but hopefully you can picture it... Anyway, it doesn't get in the way of putting her in the seat at all. Apparently there's now an anti-rebound bar available for our carseat that takes the place of tethering RF, but I've found this to be easy enough not to need to buy another piece. I know this seat is in the minority for allowing RF tethering, though.

@MamaG: We have a Britax Marathon 70, and we followed the car seat lady's advice on rear tethering. I have a 2003 Toyota Highlander, and have had no issues with it. It also made me feel as if the seat was more secure with the tether RF.

I think how you tether it will depend entirely on which car seat you have, but it's my understanding that it's something on the top of the car seat that you attach to the latch on the back of the seat (when forward-facing) and it shouldn't impact your ability to put your LO in and out of their seat.

ETA: Oops - just reread the title and you're talking about RF tethering? My mistake!

I don't have a picture, but we used this advice:

http://thecarseatlady.com/rearfacingtether/

Britax's manual really sucked at explaining how to tether and their alternative options sounded absurd. It doesn't add any complicating factors to the seat and it's still very simple to get him in and out (and the option we were first considering definitely sounded like the 3 ring circus you described)

We moved our older daughter from RF to FF at 1 yo when we moved to her convertible. At the time the way it was recommended to tether the seat just wasn't practical without it being a three ring circus to get her in and out of her seat. It was the choice we made at the time and I'd prefer not to be judged.

I'm older and a tad wiser now with LO2. Amuse me and show me images of how you have your seat installed in your vehicle and how it's tethered or anchored. LO2 is already unhappy RF when she's alone (without the older entertaining her). And while I know it's safest, I know that I have a high distraction factor when I have a screaming kid in the backseat too. Nonetheless, I want to see if we can make this work.
