She should get the test to find out if she’s sensitized. Early in my last pregnancy, the blood work made it like I might have been sensitized, but it was actually residual positive from a rhogam shot I had many months earlier during a miscarriage. Conventional thought is that a dose of rhogam shouldn’t trigger a positive test after a couple of months, but we found that to be untrue. Later in my pregnancy, the test became negative.

What a shame. I am negative and my kids are both positive but luckily I got my shots as needed. I hope it all works out for her.

I don't think she has had the test, I did bring it up to her but I can't remember the answer (the convo was 2 months ago). Her LO2 had positive blood so she knows it's a possibility. She knows it gets worse with each baby that has positive blood, so she is praying that LO3 will have negative blood and it be a non-issue, and then possibly stopping there (no more kids / pregnancies).

A friend had to deal with this. Not sure if she never got the shot or had a MC she didn’t know about.

She had to be closely monitored at a bigger hospital a couple hours away from us. Everything worked out ok but I think they told her she shouldn’t have any more kids as it can get worse with each one.

If I'm not mistaken, it's possible to test for antibodies to find out if she was sensitized or not. It's normally done in early pregnancy, but in her case it would be a good idea to get checked before TTC. It's possible she wasn't sensitized despite the poor medical care. If her baby is also Rh- she should be fine, and even if they're + sensitization doesn't always happen.

Sensitivity is treatable these days, but it's still not a good thing to deal with. There's a lot more monitoring and the OB has to be aware the baby may even need a blood transfusion.

Wow, I’m RH negative and luckily had all my shots during and after my 4 pregnancies (I have 2 kids and had 2 miscarriages). What an poorly informed midwife. I saw a midwife for my first kid and she was up to snuff. Hope it isn’t an issue for her.

@DesertDreams88: This is so unfortunate and sad. I used to work in a blood bank and we had a midwife like this (who would recommend waiting until after discharge to get the rhogam from Costco "because it was cheaper"...even though that meant the patient didn't get the rhogam until well after delivery) and honestly I wanted to strangle her.

Prayers to your friend. Does she know for sure that she was sensitized? Or did she just not get the shot so they are assuming? Hopefully the MFM can help!

My friend has a negative blood type and was sensitized on her last delivery because her midwife was dumb and didn't have her get the RHOGAM shot ever :( She is trying for another baby, and I *think* she met with a MFM to talk over the possibilities. She is a very optimistic person so she is taking it in stride, but I'm pretty intimidated by the thought of Rhesus disease, etc. Does anyone here have experience with this?
