@Bao: DS who is 2nd grade just took the bus home yesterday for the 1st time and he got off at the wrong stop! DH was at his bus stop and I was home and saw another mom walking up my driveway with my DS - whoops!

So, yeah I would be hesitant to send a 4 yr old!

@looch: right! Yeah I think right now she wouldn't know what to do in almost all situations. I'm not even sure she can climb the bus stairs on her own haha!

@Bao: you have to do what you feel is right! It can change from one moment to the next.

What I meant though, was when you're going on a field trip, it's one stop, with practicing riding the bus, kids learn to look out for a landmark before their home, so they know the stop is upcoming, what to do if the driver misses the stop, etc.

My 4.5 year old will be riding a bus. he didn't get to go to preschool last year because as a full time mother, there was no one to take him from preschool back to daycare, and switching to a preschool daycare was not an option.
So finally this year the district is offering bussing for four year olds in preschool and I'm thrilled because now he can attend preschool and get picked up and dropped off from his home daycare.
I'm not concerned at all.

DH and I talked about it and agreed she's probably too young this year. Definitely next year though! Thanks everyone :)

@Bao: The boys being on the bus is reassuring! They could help her out. I would test it out and then pull out if she doesn't like it.

@Mrsbells: the teachers just mentioned it's super chaotic and congested at pick up, the parking lot is small. So that was another reason I was like ugh to avoid all that...

@Bao: I would prefer to pick her up myself if that was an option. I would only go for the bus ride if I had no alternative such as if I wouldnt be able to make it on time

@bluestriped bee: the boys across the street who she likes, yes. She will ride next year morning and afternoon so we were thinking it would get her used to it since it would only be for the ride home.

Is she almost 5? One day there was a substitute bus driver and he totally passed our house. DD1 was 5 and spoke up right away so he came back around. I just have more confidence in a 5 year old to deal with your more out of the norm situations than a 4 year old.

Any one in your neighborhood doing this, too? Maybe find neighbor kid that could be her buddy.

If you don't know anyone, I would pick her up. 4 does sound awfully young. But I don't know what's common these days.

@looch: there's not an option to ride, she has been on a bus before for trips so it's not a completely foreign concept. @cam: yes I could pull her from it if it doesn't work out, and just pick her up. The preschoolers sit up in the front of the bus there are designated preschool seats.

I don't see why not, especially if the other kids are around the same age. It would've been nice to have some leeway to prepare her though. Can you say yes and then pull her off if it's not working out? I rode the bus starting at 4 for jk

I learned today that at my sons school, bus kids and parents rode together to get the lay of the land.

Could you either ride with her on the bus, or follow in you car a few days to orient her?

We just found out at LO's orientation that she can ride the bus home after school (we still have to do drop off because it's PM preschool), I'm torn on what to do! It would be really convenient but she's only 4, and she says she doesn't want to. But she also says she doesn't want to go to school at all, so...

What would you do? I have to decide by tomorrow morning.
