@Mrs. Jacks: oh I don't know my friend. People here in Nashville seem to be BAFFLED by how a four way stop operates. It makes me crazy. Also... Using blinkers seems to be wholly optional.

@prettylizy: Seattle seriously has the worst drivers on the planet. (With apologies to native Seattlites, but it's true.)

@Mrs. Jacks: I work in insurance, and I can't tell you how many times I've had clients call about accidents because of waver-oners at intersections. Then it becomes a big ole mess because one guy says "well he waved me on" but that does't matter, the fault laws follow right of way. I'm like you, I just say to heck with them and get out of there.

You were right. At a 4 way stop, it's first come first serve. In the event that two vehicles arrive at the same time, the person to the right goes first, then again, it continues in order of arrival. So after the first person at E went through, it should have been you, then the other three at E could go.

@jedeve: You would have been first unless you were in Seattle. Then all parties would sit in the intersection waving each other on saying, "No, you go first." "No, no, you go first"... That's when I seize the right of way!

@mrsjyw: I think that was it. Since they were being detoured from a major street to a little side street, they forgot to pay attention to traffic laws. The other place it is detoured they put up temporary stop signs.

@HabesBabe: I wondered that too. I think the E street is slightly wider, but it's still an unmarked two lane side street. I don't think that counts? Traffic laws can't expect you to get out and measure!

I would think yes, operating as 4 way stop. Maybe the E lane didn't pay attention to any traffic rules because of the construction detour?

I agree with you. To be honest, I don't even think around these parts people do the "to the right" thing - it's kind of based on who was there first. Granted I don't live in a huge city, so it's pretty obvious to tell who was there first and who was not.

Was an actual stop sign? If so, you are right. But if it wasn't a stop sign, I would think that whatever cars were on the "bigger" street have the right of way.

Someone settle a right of way debate for me:

The other day I was at an uncontrolled intersection. If it was points on a compass, I was at S. There were a bunch of cars on my right, E, because a road was being detoured through that intersection. So there were 4 cars turning left from E onto S.

I thought I had the right of way since I got there before the last 3 cars. Apparently they did not think so, and all went. I thought the "person on the right" rule only applied if you got there at the same time. I obviously would have been there before the last 3 cars, so I should have had the right of way, right?

Husband doesn't think so either. But I think I'm right!!
