I had the same feeling in my right side in both front and back. It was so uncomfortable that I could hardly sit down without crying. The answer for me was the chiropractor. She has been a life saver for me. It helped with the rib pain after 2 adjustments and sciatica after 3 or 4. Now, at 38.5 weeks, she's using the Webster Technique to make sure baby is in the right position for birth. She specializes in prenatal care and has a ton of helpful exercises for at home as well. I hope you get some relief soon!

@mrsblue- i had the exact same issue. The doc finally ordered an ultrasound to check my organs up there to be on the safe side. Everything was fine. The pain went away around 26 weeks for me (was present from about 16-26), and just came back at 32 weeks. Those few weeks off sure were nice! The doc said that most women's uterus are skewed to the right and there are several major organs are musher up there. Hopefully yours is normal too!

@pastemoo: It's still alive and well, unfortunately. I think it's just the babies pushing my organs into my rib cage, since it's better when I stand or lie down. I'm going to mention it again at my next OB appt, though,

Is the pain any better?
At 22 weeks I had this pain and it was so bad I went to the ER. I am not a wimp either--I usually withstand a lot but I was concerned. The ER send me to L&D and they did an ultrasound of my liver, gallbladder, and kidneys. In the end it turned out I was fine and it was just the baby fitting in between my ribs!
The pain came and went but was pretty awful until the little guy arrived--and then it was instant relief.

@Sugar.Biscuit: Thanks for the tips! I'll try to keep track for the next few days and see if I can see any connection to food or if these babies are just wearing their mama out early! Good luck with the doctor! I hope they get it resolved quickly and easily!

Also I have a sharp stabbing pain just below my right rib cage & the pain almost always radiates into my right shoulder. It usually hits hard and then I have a dull pain in the area for a while. It's not fun so I hope that's not it! Again, I highly suggest doing a sings & symptoms log along with food diary.

@mrs.blue I've never been pregnant but I am currently going though issues with my gallbladder. Dr. told me to completely take ALL fat out of my diet for awhile and to see what happened. Shortly after my ultrasound came back and normal I started eating fatter foods, by no means was it a lot, I ate chicken and super lean spaghetti and had another Gallbladder attack today. I would cut out all fat for a few days and see what happens. Also chart everything you eat and what pains you are having and when. Once I did this I could diffidently see the connection with the fatty foods. Dr. said that even though my ultrasound looked good there was a chance that my gallblader just isn't functioning properly which you can not see via ultra sound. Seeing the Dr. tomorrow to talk more about it. Sounds like I will be drinking a dye and doing a live xray soon. GOOD LUCK!

@Mrs. Blue: I didn't either :( I never felt the need to research things that didn't apply to me and obviously never anticipated it. I was so scared because I knew nothing about it either.

@Mrs. Blue: the crazy thing about pre-e, that I know from experience, is that not all symptoms present themselves at the same time, or ever. You can get some that seem harmless on their own, but paired with just one other one is indicative of an issue. Not saying you have it- 20 weeks is super early (we found mine at 38 weeks though I think I had it for two weeks prior) for that but just to make you aware :)

From like 8-24 weeks I had a rib that was for some reason, poking out. It was painful in the way you describe, and my doctor said it was simply from ligaments stretching out and my organs rearranging. (I also have a crooked back from an injury which may have played a part) You could visibly see where it stuck out weird if I arched my back. After everything shuffled out a little, it stepped back in line and all was fine :) She said I could pursue physical therapy at the time, but I didn't.. for some reason..

@Coco Bee: @regberadaisy: I would definitely think it was babies pushing or moving, except I'm still where I can barely feel movement (20w tomorrow). Other than just the fact that they are already taking up a lot of room combined, I can't imagine that their movement would be causing it, especially since it has been going on for so long.

Coco bee: Thanks for the pre-e heads up. My blood pressure has been low (today it was 122/64), so I can't imagine that it would be that, but I guess you never know!

@edelweiss: Interesting! Apparently, according to Dr. Google, gallbladder issues are pretty common in pregnancy or right after.

Yes, I had a constant nagging pain under my right rib cage. Little girl loved to jamb her foot in my rib cage! Even now when she's laying her feet are always up & kicking!

That happened to me once LOs kicks got stronger. He would kick me so hard my ribs actually started to splay! I was in constant pain.

But careful though because if it's your liver it can be indicative of pre-eclampsia and once it reaches the liver it can be really dangerous!
I'm sure it's not that serious though.

i don't have personal experience but my friend was having what she thought were severe gas pains during pregnancy. from what she said, the pain was acute, she'd be laying on the floor or had to go throw up. her family has a history of gallbladder stones so after the baby was born, her mom told her to get it checked out--it turned out to be gallbladder stones and she had outpatient surgery. everything seemed like it went well and the surgery was not too disruptive. i'm sure it's different for everyone, so this is just FYI--i hope it's nothing serious and not too uncomfortable for you!

I've had a consistent pain in my right rib cage and my back in the same area for about the last 5 weeks. It's usually not too bad in the morning, but it gets so uncomfortable from about after lunch until I go to bed. It does feel a little better if I stand or lay down, but otherwise it's pretty constant. It's not a cramping or burning feeling. I think of it like someone punched me in my rib and broke it in both the front and back, though the front is worse; it feels like what I imagine it would be like to be healing from a fracture or something.

I ask my doctor about it today, and she said it could be a normal pregnancy thing or it could be my gallbladder. She said to pay attention for a few days and see if it gets worse after a fatty meal (which I took as permission to go eat nachos at lunch).

I'm just wandering if anyone had pain like this and if it was just a normal thing or if it was your gallbladder.
