@daniellemybelle: I think it is possible, because the swing is still inclined and more snug than the crib.

I would try doing naps first, if you don't want to go while hog. Naps were also key for my son's night sleep.

@daniellemybelle: FWIW we are doing nights before naps too. We also have a swing napper.

I think our issue is the being cradled part. I think he likes having his arms snug and right near his head (not swaddled though). I guess I just hope that need gets less intense soon.

@Mrs. Yoyo: Oh, thank you! I think I was thinking of something else. We will have to try that when we get back from out of town.

@wonderstruck: You know, I didn't think of that! Our crib sheet is not very soft. I have a minky blanket that I feel like I could strap down to the mattress somehow...

@MrsMcD: I do think that's the biggest thing... and that the RnP cradles the baby, while the crib is just sort of open & big.

@looch: Is that still true, do you think, if she has never really napped in her RnP? For some reason she never really took to it for daytime sleep. We finally figured out she would nap well in her swing and has been doing that for several weeks.

This is not rock and play suggestion but rather a timing one: you may have to do nap and night transitions at the same time. I tired to do nights first and it did not work, it just confused my son.

My sister has a little one and said that the transition from PnP to crib is made difficult because the crib is a flat surface whereas (I assume) the PnP is not a flat surface. Sorry if someone already said that.

One thing that really helped us was using a minky sheet (or if you have a minky blanket that's larger enough to tuck around the mattress that works too) - for our LO it seemed the big thing that upset him was losing the softness of the RnP. Other than that it was just a gradual process. I'd move him back to the RnP after a couple of wake-ups, but it happened less and less until he fully transitioned.

We went cold turkey. Just put him in it one night (although we did it after he fell asleep) then he would wake up in his room- he got used to it. It took a little time- but eventually he got it. He is a pretty good sleeper now.

@MamaMagpie: @blackbird: Thank you for your tips!

Last night was a little better... Her stretches were longer & she went down each time without waking up or fussing. I didn't stay up to dream feed her at 11:30 like I usually do, and I'm wondering if we should just give up the dream feed for now? It doesn't seem to make her sleep longer.

The Merlin was better for us but only because she was rolling at month 4.

I wouldn't go back at night but I did keep RnP naps for a couple weeks on weekends. Daycare could get her to snooze in the PnP but we had more issues than she did. I honestly let daycare do the vast majority of nap training.

E was 5.5 months when we did CIO. I have some old posts on it, but max she cried was 20 min I think and it was for all wake ups except if I thought she was hungry.

She was maybe 4 months when we moved from the RnP to the crib with the Merlin and inclined nest and slowly took away those crutches. First the nest, then I took the books out from the under the crib. She STTN maybe once a week by 4.5 months and then started rolling in the Merlin at 5.5 months and it had to go.

My old posts may have more details but it took about a week before she was consistently STTN

@daniellemybelle: we were right where you are when we first tried the transition at three months -- not fun. After five days of reeeeaaallly awful sleep and it just not getting even a little better, we decided he wasn't ready and waited to try again in a couple of weeks.

The second time we tried, we just steeled ourselves for a few rough nights and were resigned to just being tired zombies until it worked. Some things that helped:
- kept him swaddled while he got used to the crib
- I put a boppy like a horseshoe around his legs (I suppose like a towel nest?) and had the sides touch his legs and sides (he was swaddled and nowhere near being able to roll/move so I wasn't worried about suffocation)
- started at night because he was better at nighttime sleep than daytime sleep
- really cracked down on a bedtime routine so that he started associating it with sleep

ETA: on your questions/points --

- Merlin suit: it is now our BFF! But we are considering it a tool to help transition out of swaddle and just started using it a couple of weeks ago with pretty good results
- bit by bit: we decided he just wasn't ready and went back to the RnP, and when we tried again a week or so later, it went well
- naps first: I felt like H was a crappy daytime sleeper anyway and so it wouldn't be a good judge on how well the crib transition was going...does that make sense?
- CIO: now that he's been in his crib for nights and naps, we are working on letting him fuss a while before rushing in. At this point, as much as we hate hearing him upset, it's more important to help teach him to fall asleep on his own. At four months old, we usually let him fuss for 10 minutes or full cry for 2-3 minutes before going in and rubbing his tummy and helping him. It's working pretty well!

Thanks everyone! Rather than do individual replies, I am going to respond by suggestion since many suggested the same things.

- Merlin Sleepsuit: At this point, we are still swaddling in the Halo sleep sack since she isn't rolling over yet. Do you all feel the Merlin is better than swaddling? I always thought it was for transitioning out of the swaddle.

- Doing it bit by bit: Do you think it's okay to go back to the RnP after 4 nights in the crib? I feel like since we already went "cold turkey" that might just confuse her?

- Naps first: Honestly, I just don't know if I can give up our awesome swing naps. They are my salvation! She was such a bad napper for so long that I am pretty sure I am going to keep her in that swing until it breaks. I guess since she was a pretty good nighttime sleeper I thought the crib would be easier at nighttime but I was wrong :(

- Sleep training / CIO: A few of you mentioned you did this along with transitioning to the crib. How old was your LO? What was your method? Did you CIO for all night wakings?
E
@Mrs. Yoyo: I washed the cover to the RnP & it's in the laundry room so I can't give into that temptation, though I have been totally succumbing to the temptation of cosleeping, which is like 2 steps backwards!

Tagging all of the wonderful people who offered more lengthy advice so you will see my reply :)

We did a RnP transition with the bed on a slant plus the nest for a week or maybe two. Then we did sleep training to a sleep sack with a little CIO (20 min tops), and she's been more or less STTN since, aside from a few growth spurts that resolved themselves. Best decision ever, even though it was hard at the time. It was like a bandaid I ripped off

I had that problem. I waited a week to see if it would get better and then put rolled up blankets all around her, a huge SIDS no-no, but it worked. Something about making the crib seem smaller.

We went cold turkey. 3 nights of hell and then it just worked. He still naps in his swing but sleeps well in his crib (5-6 hour stretch). We also would lay him in his crib during the day with us talking to him so he saw it as a familiar place. Our crib is on an incline and he has two hand towels rolled up around his bottom.

@daniellemybelle: I remember googling this so much when I transitioned my LO out of the RnP. I would try to put her down for naps in her crib and she hated it and wouldn't sleep and just kicked her legs like a crazy woman. So I would give up and just put her in the RnP. I don't know if it was a fluke or what, but what ended up working for us was the following:

I put her to bed for the night in the RnP...she would sleep a long stretch in there...like 6 hours and have a MOTN feeding and fall right back to sleep after the feeding. She was still swaddled at this point. I think she was maybe 2 months. Well, since she was basically passed out after that MOTN feeding, I just put her in the crib and walked out and she was so dead asleep that she just stayed asleep in her swaddle. I don't know if she just realized she was fine sleeping flat on her back after that or what, but I was able to put her down in her crib after that for naps and bedtime. We did end up nap/sleep training a few weeks later...10 weeks or so and that did wonders for her and she went back to sleeping long stretches of time again.

I'm debating whether to use the RnP for baby #2...I loved it for all the spitting up and the long stretches of sleep early on...but I hated the process of moving them to the crib. I haven't decided...

GOOD LUCK!

This was a challenge for us, too. Here is what we did:

We started putting LO down in the crib for naps. We used the rolled up towel method since we were awake and watching her on the monitor. She was still swaddled at this point (working towards weaning from that, so she often had one arm out). We had some crazy set-ups initially, between the rolled towel and various swaddle arrangements.

After she was somewhat tolerant of crib-naps, we used the Magic Sleepsuit and began putting her down in the crib at night. I think the sleepsuit worked wonders since she still felt somewhat "cuddled" in it like she did in the RNP. Don't get me wrong, she still fussed at night, but she was able to stay in the crib overnight with some pick-up/put-downs. If she needed to nurse, I kept her in the sleepsuit if possible.

We also transitioned to using the sleepsuit for naps at the same time.

This all worked and got her sleeping in her crib fairly easily, BUT I will caution you that getting her out of the sleepsuit has been hell on earth. Baby Girl became very dependent on her sleepsuit, and I refused to buy the bigger size. It was also becoming a bit ridiculous since we only had one, and the thing was being toted all over the place and it needed to be washed at some point!

ETA: This is probably completely not what you want to hear, but if I could go back and redo the whole thing, I would have just transitioned her into her crib cold-turkey. We are going through all of the tears and crap sleep now after taking away the sleepsuit. I think it may have been easier to just get all of that out of the way when she was a bit younger and more tolerant of change. Good luck with whatever you decide!

We really struggled with this, too!

First...check out this blog by Mrs. Blue: http://www.hellobee.com/2013/09/03/surviving-reflux-colds-angle-sleeping-and-crib-nests/
I found it way too late, but it's a fancier version of what we did, (we used the Safelift Universal crib wedge...http://www.amazon.com/Dexbaby-Safe-Universal-Wedge-White/dp/B00067AUP2...it wasn't great, but it was better than nothing.)

- It's probably not the most SIDS-proof thing in the world, but I would hang the t-shirt I wore overnight on the side of their cribs so they could smell me and, in theory, feel more secure. It wasn't 100% effective, but it helped a little!

Other tips:
- The Magic Merlin Sleepsuit (www.magicsleepsuit.com) was OUR BEST FRIEND. Unfortunately, the transition out of the sleepsuit wasn't the easiest thing in the world-- honestly, probably not much easier than swaddle weaning -- but it wasn't horrible, either. I wouldn't have traded it for the world, though, because it gave the babies a sense of being cozy and "protected" in that great big "bad" crib!

- Saw your reply about starting with night sleep...honestly, we started with naps for almost every part of sleep training. I figured it was better to give them a chance to "practice" during the day rather than to throw them in the deep end of the pool at night. I'll trade crappy naps for good night sleep any day!

- At first, they would only BEGIN their naps in the crib, then I would move them back to the RnP for the rest of nap. Sometimes they would cry the whole time, (I'd go 10 minutes or so with back rubbing and shhh-ing before transferring them), and other times they would fall asleep but wake up after 15-20 minutes. I tried to gradually extend the time they spent in their cribs until they went the entire nap without moving.

- Once naps were under control in the crib (that took 10ish days), we started doing the same thing at night. They would start the night in their cribs, (we were still putting them in their cribs AFTER they had fallen asleep with the bottle...not the best habit, but it was the best option for us before they were old enough to CIO...we broke it eventually!). Then, after Dream Feed, (or their first night feeding), we moved them back to the RnP to finish the night. After a few nights, we started putting them back into their cribs after the first feeding and just waited to see how far they'd stretch before needing to go back into the RnP. After a week or two, they went the whole night in the crib.

Sorry for the long post! This was honestly one of the hardest parts of our sleep training experience...we did the transition at 10 weeks, so they were too young to CIO. I remember feeling so defeated, exhausted, and frustrated, totally terrified of the many sleep training hurdles that still lay ahead of us. Once we had a plan and stuck to it, though, everything came together.

GL! Let me know if you have any questions!

@bunnylove08: We did the rolled towel around her feet to cocoon her, but no incline.

She only naps well in her swing & I don't want to mess that up for now so we just started with nighttime. I figure we can tackle naps later, but maybe I should have done it vice versa... But she always has been a better nighttime sleeper than napper so I thought transitioning her to the crib for nighttime would be easier than for naps!

Did you transition her cold turkey? When we transitioned DD we only had her sleep in the crib for naps and when she was okay with sleeping there we transitioned her at night. We made a slight incline by putting a rolled up towel under the mattress.

LO has been a relatively good sleeper for the past month, sleeping 10-5 most nights with a dream feed & going right back to sleep until 9. Now that we have transitioned to the crib, it's a mess & I am having a hard time.

It's frustrating because I know she can STTN & isn't hungry - it's just the adjustment - but I worry she will never sleep well again without sleep training. I don't want to CIO yet but I don't know how many more nights of every 2 hours & having to be nursed back to sleep I can do.

Any tips? I have attempted pick up/put down but she is not having that.

Also, since she's been having crap sleep at night, she's been taking a massive 2.5 hr morning nap. I have been letting her sleep because I figure she needs it & so do I (I'm still at home so I can go back to bed) but I wonder if I should try to get her back on her regular schedule so nursing every 2 hours at night & then going a 4 hour stretch during the day doesn't become a habit.

Oh, and we're going out of town this weekend & she is going to have to sleep in a PnP so that will be fantastic as well I'm sure.
