@Smurfette: yes, that's what he was doing! kicking his way down. I tried adding another towel so I'll see if that makes a difference.

@Goldengirl: I think we took ours out after a few weeks. I was mostly concerned about her being elevated due to reflux and her sliding, but she seemed fine with the sliding (other than turning herself around) so eventually we took down the incline and took out the U and just let her roam.

@Smurfette: I didn't do that actually... I guess that would work if I make it really thick? The issues isn't that the U is sliding down, it's that when he kicks and wiggles, he can easily push himself down over the bottom of the U, since it's not super thick.

@Mrs. Carrot: I got nervous about his face last night! But it feels pretty safe, it's just kind of a small indent in the crib, not a crazy amount of cushioning. How long did you keep the nest in the crib? Part of me thinks it might be good if he's moving around so he'll get more used to it, even though it's scary for him at first.

@Goldengirl: My daughter slid around all over the place, I think it's totally fine, just keep an eye out that if the U is high, their face doesn't get obstructed. Definitely a win that you didn't have to go back to RNP!

Woo, LO slept in his crib last night! I made a little U nest under the sheets which really seemed to help. However he still slid his bum right over the bottom and at one point we found him below it, with his head up at the bottom of the U... so I'm not sure if there's anything to stop that from happening, or if it's a good thing for him to learn to move around. He did have a few wakings, but we didn't put him back in the RNP all night so I'm calling it a win!

@Mrs. Carrot: thanks, that's all really encouraging! I definitely did backslide because he's suddenly hit the 4 month regression hard and I've been scared for him/me to get less sleep. But I know I have to do it, I'm just chicken.. and haven't gotten around to making the nest!! He's on Prevacid but I'm finding it's suddenly getting bad again with the spitting up.. although not necessarily that he's in pain, just huge spitups all of a sudden again! I read that reflux peaks at 4 months so maybe that's why.

@Goldengirl: You got some great advice already but just to chime in, I transitioned my daughter at around 14-15 weeks because I was afraid she'd freak out in a crib at daycare, so we started a few weeks before she was starting daycare. She was also a reflux baby, so we did a couple things:

1) Sleep sack. She was completely impervious to swaddles and busted out of them immediately so we did a sleep sack over footie PJs in a cool room to replicate the warmth of the RNP.

2) Slight elevation. I put a thin pillow under the mattress. It gave it just enough lift to give her an incline but not so much that she was sliding.

3) The infamous U. I was actually more worried about her sliding with the lift of the pillow than the coziness of the RNP, so I took a knit blanket, rolled it up and put it under the sheet. It seemed to keep her contained comfortably until she started to roll around.

She seemed to do OK with the transition, so I would just say give it time and if you can avoid backsliding, that would help too. Give him comfort if he's restless, but if you can avoid going back to the RNP, it might get him used to it faster. And that said, it might be worth giving him more time in the RNP as well, different kids transition differently.

And FWIW, I noticed that my kid began growing out of reflux around the 4 month mark. She was fine sleeping and we discontinued meds. She spit up until she was nearly a year old, but it didn't bother her. As her system matured and she got bigger (she was a 36W premie), her system stabilized. Hang in there, it gets better!

@Goldengirl: He's been fine so far. He's on zantac and it definitely makes a difference, but I've also noticed he's had fewer issues as he's gotten older (he was diagnosed at 2 weeks). I also try hard not to feed him too much in one sitting and that helps too.

@Goldengirl: Yeah, the Snuggle Me has the same issue. They say (for liability reasons) not to use it in a crib or bassinet. Technically it is made for co-sleeping and we tried to use it in our bed at first, but we only have a queen and there wasn't enough room for all of us with the Snuggle Me in the middle. I have a Halo bassinet set up literally right next to my side of the bed and I honestly don't see much difference between having DS in the Snuggle Me in there vs next to me in bed. I also put a Snuza monitor on him while he's in there. But obviously it is not a perfect solution. I go back and forth between wanting to keep him in there (because he sleeps so well in it) vs just sucking it up and putting him out in the bassinet without it. He started daycare this week and they only allow them to sleep flat in cribs so I may just wait a week or two and let daycare get him used to a flat surface and then take him out of the Snuggle Me at that point. Either way, at least he has gotten used to not sleeping at an incline.

@kiddosc: @MrsSRS: Thanks! I'd seen a lot of setups like this:
http://www.eveningmom.com/blog-post/the-crib-transition-part-2/
So I was confused, because it seems some people put it so the round part is at the top.

@catlady: same thing with the reflux, ugh! Now I'm like, how do I get him out of this thing?! I love the idea of the dockatot and thought that would be a great way to get around it, but then read on their site you can't use them in cribs/bassinets for safety :( Is the SnuggleMe able to go in cribs?

We just transitioned out of the RnP, although we are going to end up having more transitions to come. I wanted to keep him next to our bed so instead of doing the crib nest thing, we put him in a Snuggle Me (similar to a Dock a Tot) in a bassinet. Supposedly he can stay there until 6 months but we will see. He's still swaddled right now (he's almost 14 weeks) so we'll have to transition out of that too. At least this transition has been relatively seamless. With DD, we tried the Merlin suit and that failed, and then we just ended up with bad sleep until we finally sleep trained a few months later. (I was hoping not to deal with the RnP at all with DS but he had reflux so he ended up in it after all).

@Goldengirl: we did the same as @kiddosc, but ultimately we bought the merlin and it was amazing. The cotton one isn't warm at all, I still had to layer under it in winter, but it really prevented that startled/falling feeling and let DD relax.

@Goldengirl: I put it smack dab in the middle of the mattress, under the sheet. I put her bum at the bottom of the U so her legs were over the top of the towel. The U was narrow enough to touch the sides of her body with her arms at her sides. The top of the U only came up to her chest though, so she couldn't snuggle her face into it.

After a week of insanity(she was rolling already, so no swaddle or nest or anything) trying to transition our baby from the RnP to her crib, I decided to try putting my 3 month old on her tummy. Well...she slept. And has ever since. It took me a few days to get over the tummy thing. She has incredible neck strength and was almost rolling onto her tummy anyways, so it was inevitable(she can now roll both ways no problem at 4.5 months). She is only up 1-2 times a night and sleeps happily in her crib for naps and night time! I wasn't prepared for her to be a tummy sleeper so early but what can you do?!

Ughhh night 1 = total fail! Decided to take the plunge tonight, he went down okay, but then awake and crying hysterically after 20 minutes which he never does at night anymore. Soothed him and tried to give it another go, and then same thing, fell asleep, then woke up hysterical. He was so exhausted and his voice sounded hoarse and I just didn't want to deal with him/us being up all night. Gah! Will try again. Why don't they make the RNP in adult size?! ;)

I transitioned my baby from the rock and play to a flat bassinet in my room during a time when she was having a sleep regression while in the rock and play. This was around 4 months. Once she outgrew the bassinet, I put her in a mini pack and play next to my bed. Once she outgrew that (last week at 6 months), I moved her to a crib. It was actually a seamless transition. Even though she is not able to nap in her crib during the day, she is able to sleep in her crib as well as she was sleeping in the other things before. (She doesn't sleep through the night, but she isn't having any particular problems in the crib.) I've heard that you can put the baby to sleep in the crib in the bottom corner so that baby's feet touch the rails. That way they feel a little security. I haven't tried it though. Good luck! All this sleep is tough.

@Alba4: We did use those sacks for the first month or so but never seemed to do much except make him warm! He never liked his arms being swaddled. And now that he's approaching 4 months, I don't want to swaddle... but I wish he had taken to it better!

@Shantuck: Ah, I hope that's the case! Nights in general have become WAY better than naps (which he fights like crazy), as you said, because he's just finally too tired to fight us... so hmm I wonder if that will be the case with the crib. I will report back! Hoping to try it this weekend. And for the sleepsacks, what drew me to Woolino was that it covers all the ranges of temperatures so we don't need to have a bunch for different temps, which seems like a good idea when we live in an old house where it can get suddenly really hot and then really cold.

@Goldengirl: For us, night was much easier than day because she was so tired by the time bedtime rolled around. Hope that's the case with you as well. Also, the Grobag sleep sacks on Amazon are pretty great and come in varying weights but there are tons of affordable options out there.

Are you swaddling him? Both my boys loved to be swaddled in Halo Velcro sleep sacks. The tighter the better.

@hellobeeboston: Thanks! I have a crib wedge in there for his reflux... although it's such a tiny incline compared to the RNP! I'm so tempted to get the Woolino just wish it wasn't so expensive!

@Shantuck: This is essentially what I'm doing. All naps were in the crib today (albeit short, but that's sadly the norm these days!)... probably going to attempt night sleep on the weekend as we're a bit nervous to try on weeknights in case it goes bad.
