@lawbee11: we stayed at Casas de Suenos in Albuquerque last spring and loved it. You can choose which little house to stay in when you book, and a tasty breakfast is included.

At the Grand Canyon, check out Shoshone Point. It's a fantastic view point, and it's not on the South Rim Trail, so there's a good chance there won't be anyone else there with you (rare on the south rim in the summer!). It's just a little east of all of the south rim amenities on Desert View Dr/64. The turn off is labeled, and there's a little parking lot and a short, easy walk to the rim.

@lawbee11: Circus Circus is actually connected to the Eldorado and the Silver Legacy by an indoor corridor. There's restaurants, shops, an arcade, a circus show, etc... so it's kind of a great place to be!

@Honeybee: we actually already booked a room at Circus Circus (probably not the nicest, but we really only just need a room to sleep in since we'll be in Reno less than 24 hours. It got decent reviews and we got a room there for $39!). I looked at a map and The Chocolate Bar is also walking distance from there, so we're going there for sure! We will be there during Hot August Nights, so I am going to look into that, too! Thanks for the awesome suggestions :)

@lawbee11: Personally, I think Reno's riverwalk district is one of the nicest part of the whole town. If you want to stay somewhere close by and quiet, I'd recommend the Plaza on the River. If you want to stay in a casino, Grand Sierra recently remodeled and is nice (although it's not located downtown), and the Silver Legacy and Eldorado are good. I would stay away from the Atlantis (unless you get a tower room), the Peppermill, the Nugget, and the Sands. Downtown there are a ton of cool restaurants including the Chocolate Bar, a hookah lounge, a tapas restaurant, and a French bistro (among others). The riverwalk district is easy to walk around and there are always things going on (besides the shows, gambling, and events you'll find all the time at the casinos).

July is "Art Town" month in Reno, so there are events pretty much every night; August 3-12 is Hot August Nights, so there are concerts, events, and car shows all day and night that entire week. This is a great time to visit!

@Mrs. Jacks: You've got mail!

@lawbee11: The Star is my favorite Elko Basque restaurant:
http://www.yelp.com/biz/star-hotel-elko-2

Let me know if you need any Reno recs!

ETA: If you take Highway 50 across Northern Nevada, be warned that there are some super cool stops along the way (petroglyphs, dinosaur bones, ghost towns, etc..) but it will lengthen your drive time, and it is very desserted. It's not called "The Loneliest Road in America" for nothing!

@Mrs. Jacks: I will definitely look into taking 70 through Nevada (I would much prefer a scenic route, even if it isn't the quickest). Thank you!

@Mrs. Jacks: North shore? Ones these days I'm going to stalk your vacations. :)

@lawbee11: So you're taking I-80 from SF to Reno? It'll take you about 4 hours, through Sacramento, through Truckee, and over Donner Pass. Once you get past Sacramento, the drive becomes very pretty (high up in the Sierra Nevada mountains, with pine trees and lots of wilderness). If you want to stop on the way (although it's not a very long drive), I would recommend Truckee. It's a really cute little mountain town, and I know Mrs. Jacks could probably give you some good recs. :)

From Reno to Elko is about 4.5-5 hours. Winnemucca is a good halfway point to refuel and stretch your legs. Otherwise, Elko is a great little place to stop for lunch; let me know if you want restaurant recs (Basque food is huge in Northern Nevada, and Elko has two of the best Basque restaurants in the area, imo). Elko to SLC is another 4 hours or so, but you'll want to stop in Wendover before crossing the salt flats. So it's a pretty full day of driving from Reno to SLC.

@lawbee11: You probably want to visit Santa Monica north of LA (right off the 101). It's a nice little beach town. There are a couple of landmarks (hearst castle I think) also off the 101 north on your way to San Fran.

Monterey is a beautiful little town that I highly recommend on the 1/101 on your way to San Fran.

Also consider taking 70 rather than 80 through Nevada for a more scenic (slower) route. You'll wind through cool tiny towns like Austin (yes, I got a speeding ticket there!) 80 is fast but ugly!
