Thanks everyone. It sounds like it's totally worth a try!
@jetsa: he's fine with the car seat unless he's hungry or over tired which causes him to fuss at first.
For the most part he falls asleep as soon as we get moving. @rattles: our plan is to leave early just like you mentioned. We normally head out by 6am anyway to avoid the weekday commute traffic so an extra hour earlier shouldn't be too bad.

We've done several big road trips with LO, the first being 14 hours each way when she was 3.5 months. It actually didn't take us nearly as long as I thought it would! One thing we've learned is that it works best if we leave super early in the morning. At that stage, we would nurse her and load her into her infant seat in the dark room, cover it with a blanket, carry her out to the car, and get on the road around 4/4:30. That gave us a few hours straight of progress before she and the sun were up. Once she was up, we stopped every 2-3 hours for a diaper change, snack and scenery change. Make sure you leave room in the back seat for one of you to ride with and entertain the baby if need be!

I'm so jealous of yall. My family lives 6 hours away and it sucks, truthfully. DS has never liked being stuck in the car so its not too surprising.

Does your little guy like the car seat or no?

get your LO use to the car as soon as you can. We never did a super long driving trip with her but she can do a 3 hour car ride without stopping. She would sleep for majority of the trip.

We did a 3.5 hour road trip when DS was 6 months and he slept the entire way. We could've easily done another three hours with me sitting in the back even if he had been awake the rest of the time.

Totally fine. We've made many road trips since the early days. Most 8+ hours. Just expect it to take longer.

As long as you have stops scheduled in I think you will be fine. We did a 4 hour trip when DS was about 3 months old. He slept for a couple hours, we stopped and ate, stretched a bit then drove for about another hour. Stopped to stretch and change a messy diaper then finished the trip. It wasn't too bad.

We drive frequently to visit my family and it's right around 7 hours for us. Our first trip was when she was about 2 months.
We planned to stop every 2-3 hours if needed. But if she was sleeping we kept driving. Honestly it takes us maybe an extra 30 minutes now that she's older because we'll actually stop to grab dinner or lunch. DH eats while I change her in the car then I eat and feed LO.

She hated the car at that age but surprisingly sleeps most of the way (after the crying fit) during road trips.

I took DS on a road trip to a city 4 hours away when he was 4 months old. We didn't stop till we got there and had lunch. That was DS's first opportunity to get out of his car seat and stretch. He did great! He slept most of the way, and when he woke up, he just looked around and the car rocked him back to sleep after awhile. I think if you're stopping here and there for him to stretch out, you should be okay!

Mine was about 6 or 7 months old when we had to travel 5 hours away. We stopped for lunch but otherwise didn't have to stop for anything. One of us sat in the back and entertained her and we also timed it so that one of her naps was during the car ride. Boredom seemed the biggest issue. So yeah, the driver is bored without their SO to talk to, but at least the baby was happy

DH and I take yearly trips to Yosemite each Feb or March. Last year was extra special as it’s when we found out that we were expecting our first little one. We’d really like to take a trip again next month but are worried about the long drive with our little guy – he’ll be around 5 months old.
It typically takes us 7 hours to get there when it’s just the two of us. That’s including stopping for breakfast and lunch plus gas and bathroom breaks. I’m sure it’ll take much longer with the little guy since I’ll want to get him out of the car seat for feeding and just to stretch out his limbs a bit.

Has anyone done a long drive with a baby around this age? How did it go? I’m feeling guilty about him spending a full day in the car seat!

Thanks :)
