@Foodnerd81: Yeah, I'm not sure about the blanket either. Maybe just a A&A will work? Or I could lift it after she's alseep on the inside, so the road lights and headlights don't flash on her.

@thismustbetheplace: White noise app is a great idea! I'm going to download one right now to have ready. Thank you!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: my baby hated the car when she was younger too, and leaving at bedtime worked best for us. I would nurse and do all the regular night time stuff, then put her in the carseat instead of bed. White noise is helpful, and something to block the lights, though I would be nervous about a blanket over the car seat in case she gets over heated?

When we arrived at our destination, DH would get everything set up (PnP, sheets, lovey, sound machine, monitor.... she is so high maintenance) while I waited in the car with the sleeping baby. Then we would try to transfer her asleep, but she always woke up so I'd nurse her to sooth her again and put her back down. Fingers crossed, this has always worked pretty well. And she used to really, really hate the car!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: the bottle thing is a great idea unless you have a gassy LO like I do.. ours would need to burp and would go from zero to HYSTERICALLY crying in no time. Not fun. Just something to keep in mind!
We actually just went through this exact same scenario this past weekend (3 hour ride etc.) The only thing that worked to keep him calm/sleepy was putting my phone with a white noise app in his carseat with him, dark blanket on top. He still woke up a few times but it at least gave us 1-2 hours between stops.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: I have been known to lean over the car seat and nurse her but a bottle is much easier! :silly:

@hilsy85: @NovBaby1112: @teawithpaloma: Ok, Thank you! That makes me feel so much better about this plan. I've been dreading this for a while! Having an extra bottle handy is a great idea in case she wakes up and can't go back to sleep.

Leaving at night is a good idea - my DD is usually super calm and subdued even if she is still awake. I nurse but I keep a bottle full of breastmilk or formula for the night car rides in case she just needs a little top-off to get back to sleep.

I'd also suggest leaving at night. We've had to do this a few times and LO goes right to sleep. and 3.5 hours isnt too long of a trip, so if you left around 8pm, you would get to your destination around 11:30 and then hopefully transfer your sleeping LO.

My LO is not a great car napper, but he is GREAT when we drive at night--he falls asleep and stays asleep, and even if he does wake up he'll just sit there quietly til he falls asleep again. Iw oudl definitely leave at night.

So we are taking a road trip next week to my SIL's for my nephews 1st birthday (it's also our anniversary) about 3.5 hours away. We are staying at a Residence Inn in a 1 bedroom suite. The problem is my DD doesn't sleep in the car. Well, she does, but she fights it and only takes 30 min naps, but we've only traveled during the day. We did leave my in-law's house once and was able to transfer her to her car seat from the PnP and she fell back asleep and slept the hour ride home. We were thinking of leaving at bedtime, covering her car-seat so it's dark and hoping she'll fall asleep and stay asleep for the ride up. Then we are going to transfer her to the hotel crib (it'll already be in the room) when we get there.

Is this a good plan? I'm not sure how else to do it! Maybe nurse her to sleep(y) in the car, then strap her in the car-seat? As you can see, I'm a little nervous about this trip!

ETA: She'll be almost 8 months
