@fussygal: my LO is just a few weeks younger than yours. Last time we traveled I brought snacks, drinks, etc for us so that we wouldn't have to stop unless baby needed fed. Somehow we timed it right on the way there that he had just eaten & we only needed one stop to feed him. He slept a lot. The return trip wasn't quite as simple, but he still did well. I usually sit with him in the back while DH drives.

Also I love that mirror! I may have to get one too!! :)

We just did this! We left right after a nap. DS was awake for the first bit, napped, then we stopped and I nursed and we got back on the road. We stopped twice. I sat in the back w him and talked to him and be was pretty happy. He did get fussy a couple times so I allowed him to look at my phone for about 5 mins. Seemed to help! Good luck!

At that age, DS slept mostly as long as the car was moving. We took him on an 8 hour road trip when he was 4 months old and did great!

We stop at regular intervals to get out of the car and let her stretch. I also second pp's suggestions of hiding toys and bringing out a new one every hour or so to keep her distracted.

We've done a lot of road trips with LO. I think the real key is to manage your stress and expectations, and things will be much easier. Time it so you can leave at the beginning of her best nap time or at bedtime. Except for once, we actually try to leave 2-3 hours before she normally wakes. Now she just transfers to her carseat, but at that age we would just leave at one of her early morning wake-ups. I'd nurse her, stick her in the carseat, and we'd get on the road.

ETA: Most of our trips are 12+ hours. It's not as scary as it seems!

Time to leave for a nap. I did a few 5 hour infant road trips. When I left right before he was due for morning nap, it was a beautiful easy trip. And I was by myself. I drove more than halfway before he woke, stopped to change and feed him and just generally take a LONG rest stop. then got back in the car before his next nap.

On an earlier trip before I figured that out, my 5 hour trip turned into a 10 hour nightmare.

We road trip frequently with LO to visit my family 7-8 hours away. As much as she HATED the car seat she does exceptionally well on road trips. At that age she ate and slept!

I always sit in the back with her and at that age we preferred to drive at night when she was sleeping. For a 5 hour trip I would just perhaps plan to start around nap time and break when she wakes up from nap then get back in the car.

My LO did a long road trip at the same age and he did really well! Just bring a nice variety of toys to rotate and stop as often as you need to. We stopped three times for him to eat and change his diaper and we made a six hour trip into an eight hour one (really not bad!). My one suggestion is for you or your DH to sit in the back with her.

My little guys are rockstar sleepers on car trips. It looks like you will be stopping as needed so you should be fine. When I travelled with N in January for 9 hours (he was 15 months old), he travelled better then I did. Lol. :silly:

We are leaving tomorrow for a 10 hour trip that we are splitting in half. However, we regularly travel 2.5-3 hours with lo a few times a month. For her, I feed her right before we go and she will usually fall asleep. We still have her in the infant seat because it reclined more and I like that when she is sleeping. I've hidden some of her toys and will bring that back out in the car to provide distractions. I always feel better if she has a dirty diaper before we go because it is unlikely that she will have to go again before we get there. We listen to the rockabye CD's of popular songs and that makes her sleepy and I can sing along without it being too loud. Good luck!!

We're taking DD on a mini road trip this weekend (five hours each way). She's 17.5 weeks and on the 4th of July she did pretty well on a three hour trip, but five makes me a bit nervous. Also, when she's six months we'll likely be taking her on a 12 hour car trip to one of my work events. I'm NOT looking forward to that and may fly with her and have DH meet us there (he doesn't like to fly).

We're planning to take our time and stop as needed, but I'd love any other suggestions and tips!

Also, we bought this which I'm sure will get old after 30 minutes, but seems worth a try! http://www.amazon.com/Baby-Einstein-Discovery-Travel-Mirror/dp/B007700SEO
