@Bao: Hah - yeah, goes to show how often I get out of the house, 700 miles seem like SO much! ;)

@Shutterbug: Oh man, that would be a tough choice! Glad the roominess was the right call.

Yay - I wanted to take my car! :)

Hmm. I would say the newer car. Comfort outweighs the extra 5-6 mpg.
We have a '10 dodge charger and a '09 dodge ram. (Yes they match. They are even the same color.) My charger is super roomy and big and gets pretty good gas mileage, whereas DHs truck gets terrible gas mileage.

I vote for the more reliable car, which it assume would be the new one. :) Plus don't worry so much about miles. Cars are meant to be driven.

@Bao: Probably 700 total.

I was hoping people agreed that it made sense to take my car. The IL's always rent a car for such roadtrips - Whaaat? I don't have that much extra money... haha

We just had this dilemma for our road trip (10 hours each way) and we were debating between my newer SUV that gets 25mpg but has very low miles and also has a navigation system or DH's Prius that gets 50mpg but has 4x the miles on it already and is smaller. We went with my car and I'm glad we did because it was more comfortable and we actually got better mileage that I was expecting because it was all highway.

@swurlygurl: I know what you mean about the miles thing. DH has a newer car but has a long commute so he puts so many miles on it, and I hate it. However, mine is older and already has a lot of miles and we can't afford two care payments so his is for work and mine is for everything else. I think you will be more cozy in a newer vehicle, with four doors. How many miles would you be putting on it?

@Bao: @shinymama: That's the way I was leaning (my car is an SUV), but I feel like the responsible thing is to put major miles on the older car? Not that we want that car to die any quicker... haha

We always take my car (SUV) because it's roomier than DHs car (sporty sedan), and we also prefer the car seat in mine too.

I hate having to choose which car to take on road trips! It used to be easy because I had a baby truck with no AC so we always took DH's car. Now I have a nice new car, but we can't figure which car to take. It's a 5-6 hour car ride each way.

Take mine and put miles on the new car but be cozy and have lots of trunk space/back seat space (might have to tote around 2 other people once we get there).

Or, take DH's older car, has 5-6 mpg better, but smaller trunk (doable, just cramped), and is a 2-door car so we'd either have to cram the other two in the back, or deal with putting our car seat in their car. ETA: It's a very roomy backseat! Bigger than most 4-door newer cars

How do you choose?
