I second the granite ware suggestion, I have it in 2 sizes, though they usually don't get pulled out more than 1-2x a year. I make my christmas roast directly on the oven grates with a cookie sheet below to catch the drippings for gravy/yorkshire puddings. This method might not work for turkey though. Also I always pour drippings into a small saucepan rather than making the gravy in my roasting pan.

My Godmother, who cooks more turkeys than anyone I've ever met (1x month, at least) gave me her advice for my first Thanksgiving: "just use a disposable pan, life's too short!"

And we made gravy in it, but had an electric stove at the time. I've also just poured/scraped the drippings into a pot to make the gravy.

@peachykeen: Thanks for the recommendation which I will consider.

Just to show everyone how expensive living in a Canada is, that same pan is $100 at BB&B here!

@Raspberry: I’ve found in all scenarios that I can just pour and scrape off the drippings into another small saucepan and make a great gravy from all other roasting pans I’ve used (even the cheapie aluminum ones)

I have a Calphalon one that's about $40-50 that is very good quality and has help up well over the years.

@Raspberry: I would check Canadian Tire, they often have really great sales on stuff like this. I just checked their website and they have one with a rack that’s regularly $99.99 on sale for $24.99. Good luck!

@Littlebit7: That's what I was thinking, that I'd need one to deglaze on the stovetop for gravy. I have a condo kitchen and space is definitely a premium too!

So mid-range, "branded" pans like Kitchenaid or Cuisinart are over $100 from what I've seen. I will check out Winners/Homesense (Canadian TJ Maxx as suggested). Thanks everyone!

So I find the only upside to a heavy bottomed roasting pan is the ability to put it directly over a burner after roasting and making a pan sauce or gravy from the drippings.
I’ve used them at other people’s houses and they are nice but not worth the space in my kitchen for the 1-2x a year I would use one

I have a pan like the one linked below. My mom has the same kind and has used it for years. Inexpensive, but highly effective.

Is there TJ Maxx or similar in Canada? That's where I got mine. Think it was $25-30. I always use an oven bag when making a turkey, its foolproof and keeps the pan easy to clean.

I think you could get by with disposable pans but only if you have a solid, high quality cookie sheet. You dont want that bugger tipping on you!

Like others, I find other uses for mine as well. Chex Mix, roasts, etc.

I have a cheaper roasting pan, I think it was around $30 (US) and it has been great for my needs. Not sure the cost of the ones giving you sticker shock but it’s somerhing I use only 3-4 times a year and I’m glad I didn’t spend more than that.

I have a KitchenAid one that I bought on big sale at Canadian Tire, and I actually use it on a fairly regular basis - I make roasted tomato pasta sauce, granola, and Chex mix in it. I’d say it’s worth the money.

I use an electric roaster so my oven is freed up all day. I've not bought a roasting pan because they are so expensive and I only use them once or twice a year.

I have this one, I think my mom bought it on clearance at Walmart or Target for me a couple years ago and it's still good.

I know it's odd to ask in August but Canadian Thanksgiving is a little over a month away and I'm researching.

I didn't grow up with holiday turkeys but my husband did and I would also like to start doing it for my son. However, I'm experiencing sticker shock from looking at good roasting pans!

Do you have one? Is it worth the investment if I'm only using it once or twice a year - even if it lasts for many years? Or should I just double up disposable pans on a cookie sheet and call it a day?
