Seems sketchy to me. One thing if he never heard of clomid, but it is commonly used for performance enhancing drug. There have been exemptions. He should have gone thru the proper channels.

@Sunshine1810: Makes sense!

@sunny: Yes, this! And particularly the drug that is the most popular performance-enhancing among athletes!!

I'm on the fence. While I do feel bad that his fertility struggles are being made public, it's likely written in his contract that he had to go through a specific process in order to be able to legally take that drug. I understand everyone's reaction that they couldn't imagine having to clear a medication with an employer before taking it, but he signed a contract stating that he would. It's his own fault that he's in this situation when it could have been easily avoided.

It's sad that his struggles were made public but shouldn't professional athletes check on *every* drug just to be sure!? I think I would if my livelihood depended upon a clean drug test and so many banned drugs.

@theotherstark: He definitely should have gone through the proper channels first. I have heard of urologists prescribing clomid for their patients so it does happen.

Athletes know what drugs they can take or not and if they aren't sure, they are supposed to check, so if he isn't allowed to take that while playing, than I guess he'll pay the consequences. I would think he would know since the article stated that Clomid is one of the most common banned substances that has been taken by athletes. It'll be interesting to see any future follow-ups on this matter!

@theotherstark: Yeah, it amazes me that he said he only asked the doctor about the drug and didn't think to get it cleared with anyone else. Wouldn't any trustworthy doctor say "you should check with someone who knows"?

It's all so interesting. It just seems insane that an NFL athlete would not go through the appropriate channels for something like this - he had to have known this would happen. Right??

@theotherstark: I think he meant the doctor has been using it for that long? It seems like the doctor is a urologist so while it's feasible that he could handle male infertility it doesn't look like that's his specialty. But I don't know if someone could just glance at a website and say "nope, he doesn't treat that". I'm sure his wife has some right to privacy but if they went through IF there must be a record of them both being treated?

Very interesting.

If he was taking it exclusively for fertility purposes, then I feel bad that it has been made so public, but it sounds pretty sketchy to me. He is an NFL athlete and knows the type of issues these medications can cause, so it just doesn't make sense that he wouldn't clear it with the appropriate people ahead of time. And I think the article said that the physician he was going to didn't handle fertility treatments? Which I suppose isn't a huge deal (do regular physicians prescribe Clomid, or does that mainly come from REs?), but definitely doesn't help his case.

I wonder how long Clomid stays in the system? It says his wife is currently pregnant, so presumably he wouldn't have needed to continue his dosage.

Also, the article quotes his agent as saying that Mathis has been taking Clomid as a fertility drug "for 20-plus years." Um. What?? He's 33 years old. He's been taking a fertility drug since he was 13? That doesn't make much sense to me... I know some women can take things like that from a young age to regulate periods, etc., but I have never heard of a man taking something like that so early.

@Sunshine1810: I don't understand why they're going on about Clomid having no medically approved therapeutic uses, because it's such a widely used drug. But if there were ways for players to get exemptions beforehand to use it and he knew how it all worked, unfortunately he should have gotten the exemption first.

There is a process in place where he could have and should have request an exception prior to use. While it's foreign to most of us to need an employer's permission to take medicine all NFL players are made well aware of the rules. When my husband was playing I can't tell you how many times a random dude would show up at our door to watch my husband pee in a cup. It's a bummer for Robert Mathis but he knew he would be tested regularly.

@swedishfish: I would think so too, and it sounds like he did provide the documentation, but the NFL is saying it doesn't matter because he needed to go through the process before actually taking the Clomid. I can understand that as well, there are procedures...

That's tough...I don't know a whole lot about the world of pro sports but assume he should have known to go through the proper channels before taking meds, especially one that's known for being a performance-enhancing drug. It wouldn't be fair to have to tell them about going through IF, but it would still be less public than going through this.

My husband sent me this article today about Robert Mathis' four game suspension for Clomid use: http://deadspin.com/robert-mathis-picks-a-ped-fight-with-the-nfl-hes-not-go-1578394706?utm_campaign=socialflow_deadspin_twitter&utm_source=deadspin_twitter&utm_medium=socialflow

Before I actually read the article, I immediately felt for him as I was sure that it was embarrassing making the fertility struggles he and his wife were having, public. I can't even imagine if DH and I had to do a press release about ours!!

I also felt that it was unfair that the NFL was commenting on Clomid not being FDA approved for male infertility. I know a lot of people whose husbands have used Clomid even though it's not FDA approved for that use. I am using Lupron for my current IVF cycle, and it's not FDA approved for IVF, though widely used for that purpose.

However, in continuing to read, I was surprised to see that Clomid is one of the most popular performance enhancing drugs used in sports.

I would hope that Mathis is telling the truth, but I guess you never know. If he is being truthful, I do feel bad that he and his wife's struggles to conceive had to be made so public, but also understand that the NFL has rules and protocols to follow.

What does everyone think?
