Sounds like she doesn't really understand it. I would totally feel safe doing what you're doing. I'm just going by how my body feels and if it doesn't feel good, I'll stop that activity.

@lady baltimore: meh, honestly, she sounds uninformed enough for me to dismiss the advice, then, and do my own research.

@Mrs. Pen: They sit around eating bon-bons, DUH! No, really, they scale accordingly and listen to their bodies :) And the serious/pro ones always have a team of professionals on their side who really understand their field

So long as you've been doing it since before pregnancy, you should be fine! Heck - I'm still playing tennis at almost 34 weeks pregnant. A little belaying isn't going to hurt a thing!

I climbed and belayed my husband until about six months when I couldn't fit into my harness any more. After that I wore a maternity harness a few times. My midwife had no problem with me climbing at any point in the pregnancy and I know other mamas who have done the same.

My doctors rule was to not start something new. He said I could continue my regular activity until my body said otherwise. It is how I took both of my pregnancies.

I'd fine with it. She clearly doesn't understand how belaying works, and while I get that it's better for her to be a bit cautious if she's not sure, as someone who does get how belaying works I think it's totally fine.

@lady baltimore: I follow to rule that as long as it's an activity you did prior to pregnancy, it's fine. Rock climbing (assuming in a gym), is actually super safe so I'm not sure what could happen. Well, even if it is outdoors, I think as long as you have experience you're fine. The advise I follow is don't start a new fitness regime while pregnant, but maintain what you've done previously.

@blackbird: lol well maybe your doctor isn't a heavy lifter lol! I'd be curious to know what other weight lifting ladies did during pregnancy. I know Ashley Horner actually published a pregnancy fitness guide!

@blackbird: I don't think she really understands how it works - she basically said as much. So she couldn't cite a specific concern. First she said, "well, they're more than 20 lbs" (their recommended lifting limit, which is absurd), and when I countered "but I'm not lifting them," she asked, "but what if they fall?" (which they do, frequently, but that's neither here nor there).

I didn't try overly hard to win her approval, because by the time I go in again, the session will be finished. And I didn't feel like explain the whole workings of the belay system.

@lady baltimore: my dr told me not to lift more than 45 lb at the gym. Which is "standard" advice. 45 lb is a joke for me, so I didn't follow that guideline. Kinda freaked my DH out, too, but he has to trust that I know my body and won't push it. Everyone has different limits and strengths and weaknesses. Hard for one isn't hard for another! With my second pregnancy, I will say that I didn't even consider scaling back until my body told me to. And it definitely did :)

What's her actual concern with belaying? The pulling?

@blackbird: That's sort of what I had been going with. My cursory research said that it could be safe, if done smartly. I didn't feel uncomfortable or taxed by it, so I planned to stick with it until my body gave me some sign that it was time to stop.

Actually, that's still my plan, but now DH is freaked out. :bummed:

I've done it. Rock climbing didn't feel uncomfortable. I'm more of a "listen to my body" sort of person than simply not doing something

Anyone have experience with it?

Dr. Google seemed to say it wasn't especially risky, and I have been to the gym the last two weeks (belaying students, not climbing myself). I asked the CRNP about it today, and she said she "wouldn't recommended" it, but she also kept pointing out that the kids are more than 20 pounds. I tried to explain that I'm not exactly "lifting" them, but she held firm. She didn't actually tell me not to go, but she clearly doesn't like the idea.

I hate to start my pregnancy not listening to the NP's advice right off the bat, but she also pretty much shot down everything I asked about. It seems like if she doesn't specifically know something is safe, then she "doesn't recommend" it. I'm not going to live my pregnancy avoiding herbal tea because "most of them haven't been studied," you know?

Anyway, any climbing mamas here? I'm scheduled to go to the gym five more times in the next three weeks, and then I'll be done.
