LO was a swing baby and did get a flat head, but insurance won't cover the helmet (neurologist said its unnecessary) and its not so bad, her hair will cover it. Also the majority of her flatness is genetic, according to the neurologist we saw. I have it, my mom has it, etc. But prior to seeing a specialist we were told to do lots of tummy time and change her position.. (LO was stubborn though, would tip her head one way when the rest of her body was the other way and started rolling belly to back at 2.5 months.) Anyway I didn't have a rnp but I think it's a combination of things not just a rnp. Mine spent nights in the pnp. It does tend to be more prevalent in "good sleepers" though, or at least that's what I read.

My LO slept in the RNP and did not get a flat head. You just need to be cognizant in placing their heads in different spots when you lay them down to sleep. Also, do LOTs of tummy time.

I think the car seat and swing are worse for flat head than the rnp because they are hard. My lo uses the rock and play overnight and his head is great although he has a bald spot right in the middle.

I can also attest to head shape fixing itself. Lo was a micro preemie so he laid on one side of his head or another for a very long time. Preemie's often get "toaster head" - horrible name! We were very careful about switching him from side to side but sometimes his head really was flat. After working on positioning it fixed itself pretty quickly. I think older babies take a bit longer.

We didn't use the RNP but my lo still had a bit of a flat head...The doctor wasn't too concerned about it and said its pretty common now with the "back to sleep" thing. For what its worth, when we noticed it getting flat, we made an extra effort to do more tummy time and it did help.

Our baby mostly sleeps in the crib, but occasionally in the rep. He has a flat head an may need a helmet. Pediatrician said it would have happened regardless of which he slept in and to do more tummy time

I just wanted to throw out that in the past several months, two of my friends' babies had to get a doc band. Obviously, it's not ideal, but the babies weren't phased by it AT ALL. It seems sad, but it's really not a terrible ordeal for them.

We never used an RNP but my daughter slept (always on one side) in a bassinet. At four months our doctor noticed a little flat spot on the side and suggested turning her to the other side. I could never see the spot, though. And she got older and it stopped being an issue.

If you can physically see a spot you likely would have had one no matter how hard you tried to prevent it. Don't feel bad! It'll probably go away, but if not, it can be fixed.

@photojane: I think I read that it will resolve itself in time and It pretty much already is (she's 4.5 months) - I can't remember what the dr said but she apparently didn't really think it was an issue! I worry about everything though :)

Same exact thing here! The pediatrician on Wednesday said its to be expected and to just make sure we turn the rock n play 180 degrees every so often so he's turning his head different ways to see the room, to avoid the spot wearing unevenly. Or when he goes in the crib, laying his head at a different end each time. Said as long as it's not uneven it should round out by 6 months. I was scared of the helmet too!!!

My LO napped all the time in the rock n play. She does have a flat head, but I wasn't good about doing tummy time and positioning her head in the crib either. My pediatrician says flat heads are pretty common since the whole "back to sleep" campaign and it won't be that noticeable once she gets older.

@kml636: has your dr mentioned anything to you about it? She goes in for her two month check in about a week, and I'm sure the doc will say something. I hear flat head is pretty normal, but I'm terrified of the helmet!

My LO alternates between the crib and rock and play. She has a small, flat bald spot... I would definitely ask your dr if you are concerned!

If you used the RNP did your LO develop a flat head? If so, how long did baby sleep in it & when did the flatness go away/LO's head round out?

Sadie is almost 8 weeks. She sleeps in it every night & for an occasional nap. She naps in the swing, in my arms, or on her boppy usually. Most of her awake time is flat on her back. She has developed a crater-like indent on the back of her head. It's not flat, but there's a large circular indentation. I'm worried - don't want her to have to wear a helmet!
