My mom has been saying for years that she wants to give me the wood rocking chair that she used for all of us kids. It looks a lot like the one @Charm54 posted and I have never found it particularly comfortable. I may have to go the 2 chair route and get a glider for the nursery anyway and maybe put the rocking chair in our living room.

We have DHs grandmother's rocking chair that she rocked her babies and grand babies in.

It was perfect for us - but DD was/is a great sleeper and I bottle fed.

I have the rocker that was given to my mom at her baby shower while she was pregnant with me. It's solid wood and gorgeous. I spent lots of hours in it and still sometimes rock my 4 year old when she asks. It's not as uncomfortable as you'd think :-)

We went and sat in various chairs this weekend, and DH agreed with me that a fully upholstered glider (i.e. no visible wood) is the only way (for us) to go. So much more comfy (we're envisioning many hours of sitting there with baby) and the fact that it looks like a regular upholstered chair means we can use it in our family room after. Both come down to practicality for us, however, I happen to also like the look of upholstered chairs.

We had an old school rocker. It belonged to DH's great-grandmother. I refinished and reupholstered it when I was pregnant, to match the nursery. I like it so much more than a glider!

Ah! My dh is the same! And I feel the same as pp's! I want something comfy! His parts had a couple old wooden ones and hd is convinced they are the best thing since sliced bread! I'm not sure how we will solve this, maybe put the old rocker in the living room and a comfy chair in the nursery....but then I'd have an old rocking chair in my living room....men, they are just so funny in what they focus on eh?

My baby isn't here yet, so I can't speak from experience, but we have an old school rocker in our bedroom like the one below. We also have a glider in the nursery.

If you can manage to have both, that would be my suggestion. That way your DH can rock the baby in the rocking chair like he imagines, but you can also have a comfortable place to nurse!

We bought the rocker at a furniture consignment store a few years ago.

I have to echo what the previous posters said. DH and I both spend so, so, so much time in the glider and have said on many occasions how glad we are that we splurged on a comfy, soft one.

We actually have 2 wooden rockers in other rooms - I use them for nursing occasionally, but they aren't so comfy. Also, as DS has gotten bigger and more wiggly, I worry about him bumping his head and kicking his feet on the hard wooden arms. In short, not a fan. If you were closer, I'd offer to let you take one of them off our hands :silly:

@Lbee: prompted me to come over and chime in on this thread! I did the math via BabyConnect and, in 14 weeks, I have spent time equivalent to over 14 days nursing. So, I think it's sweet that you want to honor your husband's preference, but get a comfy chair! I fractured my tailbone during delivery (2 hours of pushing, baby with a 99th percentile head circumference) and sitting down even on a comfy couch, bed, etc. was an absolute nightmare for the first 5 or so weeks. A hard wooden rocking chair? I couldn't have done it. Even beyond just nursing itself or MOTN wakeups, there have been many, many times where baby will only nap on me, falls asleep nursing and I don't want to risk the transfer when he hasn't napped well all day, etc. The first time that happens to your husband in the comfortable chair, he will be thanking you for resisting the wooden one! (My husband sat in our rocking chair with our son during a 1.5 hour nap this past weekend.)

Has he sat in a rocker for 30+ mins? I would take him shopping and let him sit and feel the difference. And if you are going to nurse, you get more vote in my opinion since you are the one that is going to be in the chair not him.

@LindsayInNY: I was planning on using a rocker, the one that MIL used for DH. But the more I sat in it while pregnant, the more I realized that it was not going to be comfortable. We still have the rocker, it's just in the guest room.

I would suggest taking DH to go look at gliders, recliners, and rocking chairs. Let him sit in all the different ones and see what he really wants to spend a bunch of time in. I was dead set on using the rocker because I loved the look of it and its sentimental value (sounds similar to how you DH feels), but so glad my practical side won out. The rocking recliner we got is soooo comfortable. DH (and I) have fallen asleep rocking DD many a times.

@looch: sounds like a platform rocker...which I also prefer. The base of the chair doesn't move and it doesn't have the long runners a rocking chair has, but it has the same movement.

@LindsayInNY: It's a big decision! We had something like that for our wedding - the one thing my husband requested was so random (men...) and I just went with it. It was actually for a (rather expensive) food that I don't even eat. BUT, it felt so important that he was being involved and I felt like I had to oblige.

What about getting a comfy chair to replace one of your chairs outside your LO's room? Actually, I do all the rocking in our household and would HAPPILY get my husband a rocking chair if he was willing to promise me he'd do the rocking at night. I don't even want to add up the amount of time I've spent rocking him recently (4 month regression talking over here).

Two nights ago I almost had to spend the entire night there.

@oliviaoblivia: Good point... It's the one/only request he's had for that room though :/ I just don't *love* the look of it in what I envision the room to be.

@MaryM: I'm short and never thought of that... Will definitely need to consider size/height!

@LBee: As you can see from my above comments, I'm torn. I know I'll be in it more than DH but he envisions rocking LO in it. I don't think he's factoring in the nursing part and time commitment? I don't love the look of it for the room really but it's the only thing he's asked for. :/
