Thanks for all the wonderful advice ladies!! I have decided to continue using the swing. If we have to worry about it later, we will. But the swing should work until she's old enough to start sleep training or maybe there won't be any need for concern in the first place. :)

Don't worry about it, we did this a ton at first. The 5 S's were like gospel to us. Now I can put her down still awake and she'll fall asleep on her own and has been doing that since just over 6 months.

Habits don't really form for a few months. For what it's worth, my LO is still rocked to sleep for naps and nighttime, but she doesn't depend on it to stay asleep. She's not a great napper, but that doesn't have anything to do with rocking. She's an excellent nighttime sleeper!

I definitely wouldn't worry about it at this stage. M is 4 months, 2 weeks now. Sometimes we bounce or rock her to sleep if she is fussy, but most of the time, she is content to be put down and fall asleep on her own.

As a newborn its perfectly ok to rock them to sleep. Once they get out of the newborn stage at 3 months then thats when you can begin to try to let them fall asleep independently gradually

As young as your LO is, don't even worry about it! I also read HSHHC, but not until we had been letting LO fall asleep in the swing (we would then transition her to her bassinet when she was in deep sleep) for about a month and a half! After that point, like you, I also turned the swing off after she was asleep.

Anyway, we didn't really start working on sleep training until she was a little over 3 months and she took to it really, really well. Honestly, I think you are going through a lot right now, so try not to put too much pressure on yourself. If LO is sleeping well for you in the swing, enjoy the extra rest you will get as a result! Then, set a goal for yourself to "wean" her. Like I said, 3 months worked well for us, but every baby is different.

Well... we did that for my lo. Her night time sleep was never an issue. She went down no problems and slept 12 hours straight by 2 1/2 months.

Naps were very different. I would take her on walks in the stroller, put her in the swing, drive her around, etc. She always needed movement. Until magically at 8 months we put her in her crib fir her nap (we tried before and she would just scream) and she went right to sleep. She's 15 months now, and since then has been an awesome crib napper. So she did learn to crib nap without movement, and without cio.....but it did take 8 months.

Am I creating a problem for later by rocking/bouncing/swinging my newborn to sleep? Drowsy but awake only causes her to be less drowsy, become more alert, and cry, except when she's in the swing.

I read that even though rocking to sleep might work in the beginning, they will get used to rocking or motion and need it to stay asleep at night, and their sleep will get worse. So I started turning off the swing after she falls asleep (I think this was suggested in Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child.)

Is that enough for now? We even put her down in the pack n play for this morning's nap, which is a first. At least for now she seems to stay asleep...
