I'm thinking of getting a roku for my technologically challenged parents for Christmas, too. I have a roku and think they could figure it out. It's really a simple device.

I say we both get one and then swap stories of our parents' struggles using it. Lol :silly:

I much prefer the Apple TV. It's a lot more user friendly in my opinion. And he doesn't need a smartphone. It comes with a remote.

Roku is so much easier to use than a smartphone or even cable tv!! For ours (Roku 3) literally scroll around to choose your "app" (like Netflix), select, and then scroll around until you find something you want to watch!

I have the Roku and it's very easy to use. I think the interface is much easier than the Chromecast's!

@MediaNaranja: thank you!! I was thinking about the Chromecast, but you need a smart phone/tablet/laptop to use it, plus *I* have issues with that one sometimes, so I started researching the Roku and it does seem much easier. I'll be able to set it all up for him (I even made him his own profile on my Netflix account preloaded with things I think he'll like, haha) so hopefully it'll be easy!

I don't have the roku stick, but I have an older roku and use it every day. Since it has a remote, it is no more difficult than turning on the TV. I think he should be fine so long as you are there at the beginning to add the channels and log in for the first time on your netflix/hbo/etc. Once you do that it is simply a matter of clicking on things with the remote. Easy peasy! My dad sounds a lot like yours. He uses the Roku just fine (the chromecast, on the other hand....ay.).

The other good thing is that in the 3+ years I've had my Roku the only issue I've ever had was that it froze ONCE.

I'm thinking of getting my Dad a Roku stick for Christmas. He loves TV and movies, but he's so behind (he just told me about this funny movie he saw called The Hangover... on TBS... :meh: ) and I think he'd love to have access to lots of movies and TV shows that my brother and I keep telling him he'll love, like Breaking Bad, House of Cards, some HBO shows, etc.

I already read that he can stream Netflix & HBO Go using my accounts, but my question is, for Roku users, how intuitive is it? He doesn't have a smart phone, but he's used to technology as far as like, the DVR, using the laptop, etc, and they have cable internet/wifi and an HDTV. Will I be able to just plug it in and he can maneuver it or am I setting myself up for hours of tech support?

I bought him a Kindle last year and he hasn't used it once because he "doesn't know how to put books on it". My other gift to him this Christmas will be one-on-one Kindle lessons, haha.
