@LaughLines: putting your baby "back to sleep" just means that you should put her on her back initially. If she rolls on her own, that's fine. You don't have to roll her back if she falls asleep that way. You just can't swaddle her anymore.

Even if she can't roll back, as long as she can lift her head up a little, she will turn her head to the side so that her nose is open.

"Once your baby is strong enough to roll from back to tummy, he is strong enough to adjust his head and position himself for safe breathing (again, assuming he is not swaddled and there are no objects in the crib presenting a suffocation risk)."

I guess i'm just nervous about letting her sleep on her belly so young... it's been drilled into my head "back to sleep" hahah!

I just ordered a merlin suit and am hoping that it will be bulky enough that she can't roll in it and i can put her back in her crib instead of the RnP. Then once she's strong enough to roll in the merlin maybe she'll be rolling the other way too. Or maybe her startle reflex will be less intense.

ETA: the only reason we flipped her over is because she was pissed. If she was happy I wouldn't have flipped her over!

My LO also rolled back to belly first. That was (not) fun. We moved her into a merlin suit for sleeping. It made it so she couldn't roll over and seemed to give her enough resistance on her arms that she fell asleep okay-ish.

A month later we had to take her out of the merlin suit because she learned to roll in that (but my LO was older than yours so hopefully it would last longer for you if you tried it) and I asked my pediatrician about the rolling thing. She said it was fine to leave her on her stomach to sleep even if she can't roll back. Just set her down on her back.

@LaughLines: This happened to us at the exact same age. We stopped swaddles cold turkey and powered through a few nights of flipping her sunny side up over and over. It's gotten much better. We let her cry for a few seconds longer each time, but never very long. We did tons of extra tummy time so she could learn to flip to her back.

@Foodnerd81: Our scenario exactly. It sucked for a week because he would get angry he couldn't flip over, but then it was amazing sleep on his belly. We also quit swaddling and switched to sleep sacks.

ETA: As for the safety issue, my pediatrician told me if LO could get there, he was fine with him staying there to sleep. We just removed anything loose from the crib (no blankets, bumpers, soothers, etc).

Our dd rolled back to stomach around 4 months. After the first time I started swaddling with one arm out and two weeks later once she was doing it more regularly I switched to a sleep sack. She could roll from front to back at that time, but even so what I've heard is that if they're able to roll themselves to their stomach, they're fine to sleep there.

My LO was a little older but she rolled back to belly a long time before she did belly to back. Our biggest issue is she would get stuck on her belly and cry and freak out, we would put her back on her back, she would roll then freak out. It's a was really frustrating but only really lasted a few nights, then she started sleeping on her tummy pretty much always.

We switched to a halo sleep sack with swaddle arms, and would wrap the swaddle piece around her chest but not around her arms, so she still got the tight feeling. It wasn't a super quick transition or anything but nothing ever was with her sleep.

DD is 3 months old. She rolled from her back to her belly twice the day she turned 3 months old but she has NEVER rolled from belly to back.

She was sleeping amazingly swaddled in her PnP next to our bed. We'd put her down after seeing her sleep signs and she'd go right out no fussing.

Now that she's rolling I know we cant' swaddle her anymore but even WITHOUT a swaddle, she can't get off her belly since she only rolls the other way.

so we tried taking her out of her swaddle and letting her sleep in her RnP instead of the flat surface, but she HATES it and can't get to sleep. She flails her arm more than seems humanly possible (they move so fast her arms blur on the monitor camera... you can't even see them) so we try to rock her in the RnP holding her arms in place but she just can't get calm and screams. She also has always refused a pacifier so that doesn't help.

I don't know what to do, we were in SUCH a good routine and now we're at a point I can't even get her to sleep without TONS of crying and us feeling helpless until she passes out from exhaustion. Once she gets to sleep she stays asleep pretty well (2 hour naps and only wakes up once at night) but getting her to sleep is terrible.

Any advice??? anyone else have a baby roll back to belly first? How did you let them sleep after that?
