We did Fiji for ours, it was Ah-mazing! So I vote Thailand, just like @Mrs. High Heels: said, less accessable, you never know when you'll have the chance to go that far again. Although, after seeing the HB Instagram feed, I'd be all over the Philippines too ;)

@wheres_c: This is a timely thread because we are trying to plan a belated honeymoon for January! We are highly considering Costa Rica, since we are active and will want to do tours and kayaking and zip lining. Just an FYI if you do go that route, I was able to find some really awesome, affordable rentals on VRBO!

My SIL is a huge traveler and has visited 6 continents.....she says Thailand (Phuket specifically) is her favorite place in the entire world. The beach looks so incredible, though I've only seen pictures.

I've been to both places but if I had to choose I'd choose Thailand! Everything Ree723 said. The food, the culture, the people. The affordability. It's great there. I'm not a huge fan of Bangkok though so go to northern or southern Thailand.

Also, I think Thailand is less accessible than Costa Rica since its across the world, so if I had the opportunity to do anything sans kids right now I'd want to go to the place I'd be less likely to return to in the future. I feel like since Costa Rica is so close to the states, it'll be easier for you to go some other time if you wanted to.

@wheres_c: I would steer clear of or limit my time in Bangkok. It's crowded, hot, smoggy ... And did I mention crowded? There are some amazing temples there, but there are amazing temples all over Thailand.

Also highly recommend Chiangmai. We had a day with the elephants at a place called Baan Chang. Wonderful experience! We also did ziplining up there with Flight of the Gibbon. A blast! As for other areas, I highly recommend Kanchanaburi in western Thailand -- Erawan Falls is crazy beautiful and there is a lot of interesting WWII history. We went to Krabi for the coast and it was beautiful. Whatever you do, don't go to Phuket or Pattaya if you want a less crowded/touristy experience.

What about Belize? We stopped on our first cruise and loved it. We are told it is comparable to Costa Rica. We went cave tubing and zip lining. We have also been to Puerto Rico and really enjoyed. Stayed 5 days around a cruise. Stayed at the area outside of downtown with beaches

We went to Costa Rica for our honeymoon!! We stayed at the Hilton Papa Gayo in Guanacaste. It was all inclusive and the food was good! We did a day tour that included horse back riding, zip lining, hot springs, etc. We also did a jet ski tour. It was so lovely!

@mrsjazz: can you share any more info on where you stayed, what you did, etc?

@futuremama: which area did you stay in? any restaurant recs? activity recs?

@Ree723: Thanks so much for all the detail. I can use my hotel points in Samui, so that was one of the top contenders. I would love to see the elephants in Chaing Mai though. I will also look into Khao Sok! It sounds amazing!

@honeybear: Australia has always been my dream honeymoon destination. The flights are pretty long from here though and we probably only have about 10 days of FI's PTO to work with. I'm thinking Australia is best postponed until we have more time and money.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I'll look into suhkumvit. I think Bangkok is too "city" for a honeymoon, although I would love to visit at some point.

Thanks all for the input so far. Open to other options as well!

Congratulations! :) What about Australia? I've never been in February, but I have been to Queensland in late December/early January, and it was very nice then. I'm not sure about hotel costs; I expect there are a range of options.

Thailand is awesome, I've been twice. The first time was in April, which is their hottest, steamiest month, and we did Bangkok and the south (Khao Sok National Park, Koh Samui, and Koh Tao). The second time was in January and we did the north (Chiang Mai and some hill tribe treks). Both trips were equally amazing!

In the south, Khao Sok is an amazing jungle paradise - we stayed in treehouse cabins but they also have floating raft houses you can stay in, very awesome. Hiking through the jungle is beautiful and there is an amazing cave you can hike through that is very Indiana Jones like. You can also float down some lazy rivers on an inner tube and go for elephant rides. It's a magical place. We only spent one night there so I am sure there is loads more you can do, but that's all we got to during our time.

For the islands, Koh Samui is fairly developed and has beautiful beaches - nice and relaxing whilst still providing enough other activities to do if you want to get off the beach. Koh Tao has some of the best diving in the world and is very quiet and romantic, definitely recommend it.

If you go north, Chiang Mai is fascinating and has loads of culture. I cannot recommend a hill tribe trek enough! We did a three day trek, spending two nights with local tribes in their little villages, which was an amazing way to get out amongst the local people and experience some of 'real Thailand'. The trek was hard (lots of hills) but so invigorating and beautiful. If you're up for an adventure, it's awesome.

Thailand is pretty cheap overall and of course has outstanding food. The people are incredibly friendly and just so nice. The overnight trains are a great way to travel without wasting a day and are extremely comfortable. I've done overnight trains in Thailand, Russia, and China, and Thailand by far has the best system. Bangkok is a big crazy city but there is loads and loads to see and do there (the temples, floating markets, Kho San road etc), so definitely plan on spending a couple of days there.

Sorry, this is really long so I'll stop now, but I definitely can recommend Thailand as a great place to go!

I loved Costa Rica! We stayed in Guanacaste for 3 days and Arenal for 3-4. We went deep-sea fishing, zip-lining, hiking... I would definitely go to Arenal. I liked Guanacaste, but could skip it and maybe go to San Jose instead.

Never been to Thailand. I'm sure it's amazing. We went to Costa Rica last Feb. it's their dry season. It was a perfect trip. We did three days of hiking, zip lining, etc and 4 days of sitting by the gorgeous beach. Can't recommend it enough.

We're just getting around to planning our first vacation without LO.
It will also serve as our HONEYMOON!, and probably be our last vacay before we TTC#2.

We'd like somewhere where we can enjoy beaches and relaxing, but also enjoy some active activities too (hiking, horsebackriding, whitewater rafting, etc).

FI suggests Costa Rica
I'm thinking Thailand
We are open to other suggestions in South America, Central America or Asia.

Airfare is a non-issue since we have lots of airmiles, but we need somewhere with fairly moderate hotel prices.
Also we'll be going in February and want it to be warm, so not Europe or North America.

Any suggestions? If you've been to either Thailand or Costa Rica, any tips? Specifics would help.....area's you liked, hotel and restaurant recommendations, etc.
