Thanks everyone
@MenagerieMama: Yes I did receive a handout about it but it only mentions blood in stool as a possible symptom of a more serious condition intussusception

Rota vax didn't phase my LO and she actually thought it was tasty. Babies are so weird! You should have gotten a handout on all the possible side effects and what to look out for, that might be a good reference. Hope your LO feels better!

I only noticed a looser stool but the next day everything including mood was back to normal. I did laugh at the second dosage where a different doctor was administering it and said "we give this after the shots in the leg because it's sweet and babies like the taste". I told him that I didn't think that would be the case since the first time she was given it she gagged and. Choked and cried and would barely choke it down. I was right. She hated it the second time too and I disliked it more than the quick and easy stab in the arm or leg.

It's very common to have some GI symptoms with the rotavirus vaccine since like others have said it's a live vaccine. Honestly if he isn't bothered by it, it wouldn't worry me. FYI if he had intussusception (very rare) you would know right away, he would be in agony and have other symptoms too. Good luck!!

DS2 was sleepy for a day after his 2 month rotavirus vaccine, and then ran a fever and had terrible runs the second day. He was fussy and hardly ate for a few days so I called the doctor. The pediatrician told me to bring him back in if he hadn't recovered fully one week post-vaccine because its very common for kiddos to react to the rotavirus since its live virus vaccine. Luckily he was okay by day 5. Then he had zero reaction for his 4 month vaccine.

@T.H.O.U.: Yeah I'm definitely having the talk with his pedi at his 4 month visit.

@travellingbee: Awww your poor baby. I think they should really warn parents about the possible effects of the vaccine

Yes we had this reaction as well but it never stopped after that until we transitioned to a hypoallergenic formula. I was told (by our gastro) that the rotavirus vaccine can irritate the digestive track especially in those babies who already have a milk protein intollerance. They have colitis (inflammation of the colon) from the milk protein and then the vaccine further irritates it to the point of bleeding. We didn't do a second dose at the recommendation of my doctor. And I was breastfeeding and cut out all dairy but that didn't quite do it (the blood stopped but his poop was still mucousy). I wasn't convinced it was the dairy until I finally drank a big glass of whole milk and nursed him and his poop was filled with blood. I was heartsick. I finally switched to Alimentum for all of his daycare bottles and it stopped entirely (even with me nursing at night, but completely dairy free)

@Mrsbells: this is one of the only ones our doctors doesn't recommend. With my daughter (5 years ago) she had the vax and still got rotavirus bad. Our doctor doesn't feel enough long term studies have gone into it, there are common and sometimes extreme side effects, and the virus itself isn't typically life threatening.

@MrsSRS: @Mrs. Champagne:  Ugh that sucky... but its good to know that more people do react to it. My doctors office is trying to act as though its unheard of.

I feel like some doctors are just so intent on pushing the benefits of vaccines on me at all costs. I'm already pro vaccine but that doesnt mean i should turn a blind eye to an obvious reaction from a vaccine

Yes, this happened to us, twice (2 months, and I think at 4 months). It was complicated by the fact that my LO actually did have MSPI, and we were working through elimination diet stuff when she got the vaccines. Both times, I ended up eliminating more stuff from my diet because I was so focused on diet that I didn't realize it was the vaccine causing the reaction. It was only in hindsight (while looking through months of food diaries) that I realized that two of her major "food reactions" were right after the rotavirus vaccine.

I would definitely wait 1-2 days to see if the blood persists before jumping to any conclusions about dairy allergy. I really wish I had. I would have been off dairy anyway, but I also ended up eliminating other stuff that I think my LO had no reaction to, and our pediatrician didn't let me bring them back into my diet until she was 12 months old.

DS had his 2 month visit and received all the shots as well as the oral rotavirus vaccine. The next day he started showing specks of blood in his poop. I called the doctor right away and also read online about it. I found a thread on babycenter where many moms had the same thing but they were all told it was caused by a milk allergy. the nurse in my doctors office told me the same thing about a milk allergy since I am breastfeeding but that makes no sense. the oral vaccine has clearly irritated his gut. I was also worried it could be intussuception (sp?) but he doesnt look like he is in pain so they dont believe its that. Right now they are telling me to call the next time he poops if there is still specks of blood. I'm so annoyed at how they quickly blame a milk allergy and dont want to entertain the idea that the vaccine caused it. Has anyone experienced something similar?
