We also got the vaccine on recommended schedule and no side effects. She doesn't go to daycare but knowing how contagious it is, she got it.

Rotavirus is a very scary illness. Especially in infants, it can result in hospitalization and sometimes death. Our daughter had a mild reaction to the first part of the vaccine- she had diarrhea for about a week, and was dehydrated enough at one point that we brought her in to the doctor (she was fine). Despite this reaction, we decided to give her the second part as well- because mild diarrhea and dehydration is so, so much better than the actual rotavirus.
I encourage people with concerns to talk to doctors about vaccines, not just do some Internet research. Consider asking your pediatrician what they would do for their own children. My husband spent four years in medical school, and is now completing a residency in pediatrics. Googling does not equal a medical degree. There is not a big conspiracy by the AAP or companies that make vaccines (in fact, they make such a small profit on vaccines that they have to be obligated by the government to produce them). My husband cares deeply about our daughter, would do anything to protect her and not cause her harm, and we vaccinate fully and on time.

Rotavirus vaccine helped LO on the night that both of us got it from daycare. We were miserable for two days. LO was happy and virus free.

@Mrs. Pen: I have been researching vaccines and the more I dig the scarier it gets. What information have you come across that helped you make your decisions about vaccines?

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has a very user-friendly site where you can access info on each vaccine: http://www.chop.edu/service/vaccine-education-center/home.html

Here's a bit on rotavirus: http://www.chop.edu/service/vaccine-education-center/a-look-at-each-vaccine/rotavirus.html

We skipped it because after researching the diseases versus side effects, it seemed to be a "glorified flu" type of disease. Also, just as THOU said, it wasn't even all that effective so we skipped that one. I felt confident in my decision and researched both sides extensively. I'm a bit of a research enthusiast when it comes to vaccines :)

L got the Rotavirus vaccine at 2 months. The doc explained why he recommends it and the other 2 month vaccines but I can't remember what he said about that one! I remember the look on her face when she took it, though--it was the first time she drank anything other than breast milk and she was both confused and loving it.

We didn't get Rotavirus. For one, our kids aren't in daycare and for another, the side effects can be almost as bad as getting the virus itself.

@shopaholic: I would go to another ped to get it. Rotovirus is still pretty prevalant despite there being a vaccine and it really sucks for LO to catch it.

ETA: My LO is 6 months so she has had three rounds of the vaccine (along with other vaccines on the same days) and she's never had any reaction other than a very mild fever and being extra sleepy.

All I know is we got part of the rotavirus but she still caught it (probably from daycare) and its not fun. Meaning, she ended up in the ER dehydrated and still spent a week without eating more than 1 ounce at a time. Its also HIGHLY contagious.

I will be the first to admit that I am not very "into" researching and reading all the different sides of vaccinations. It's mind-boggling and as our ped says, it's "like religion!"

DH is VERY adamant and Pro-Vaccines. All that are recommended. I definitely believe in vaccinating, though I am content with the way our ped is spreading them apart for us. I thought we were going to get our 3rd and last "2 month shot" and the Oral Rotovirus one today. TBH, I don't even know what the 3rd one is, but he didn't have it and we go back Friday for it.
Then our Ped tells me he doesn't give the Rotovirus. Something about it being a live virus and the reactions it can cause. He is a rather "hippie" "crunchy" doctor, and on the Dr. Sears recommended list. He was also referred by a couple of DH's co-workers. One took her kids to another ped for whichever vaccines ours doesn't provided. The other does selective vaccinations we think.

So... all this to ask. WWYD in our case? Would you take your LO to another ped to get the Rotovirus? If you selectively vaccinate, which ones do you skip or delay and why? I know I'm basically asking for the Cliff Notes version of vaccines. (Or if someone HAS a Cliff Notes link to this kind of stuff, I'd appreciate it!)
