To be honest I think sometimes we are too sensitive and make it almost a crime to be honest. We shouldnt be afraid to be truthful. The fact is they didnt strap the kid in correctly. There is nothing malicious about stating a fact.

We all make mistakes, DH and I didnt strap LO in right in the beginning either. But there is nothing wrong with saying so.

I love Kate & William and I can't imagine the immense pressure they must feel. And it's understand that they probably just wanted to get out of there quickly. I guess she could have totally adjusted once in the car. But also the baby was all swaddled up so I don't know how she would have pulled that swaddle out b/c I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to strap your baby in a car seat wrapped in a blanket. Anyways, it was an innocent mistake and hopefully she adjusted it in the car.

@bluestriped bee: actually, yes. If they didn't know how to put their child into a car seat safely, they could have asked a nurse.

I'm thinking they fixed the straps in the car, too. I saw the video clip where had the baby in their arms walking down the steps and talking to the press. I'm thinking they placed the swaddled baby in the seat, carried him in, and then fixed it in the car. No need to unswaddle and put on the straps in front of all the press! I couldn't imagine!

I do wish people would just let them be. Yes, people look up to them, but I really doubt parents would refer back to that picture and think, "oh that's how you put a baby in a carseat". Carseats come with instruction manuals... and whether or not people follow the given instructions perfectly is on them.

@MamaMoose: @zippylef: That's what I thought too! I totally understand wanting to leave him swaddled until he was safely in the car - he's outside for the first time, it's the day after he was born, and there's a crazy number of people out there! None of us know what they did once they were in the privacy of their vehicle.

Im honestly of the opinion that they were just trying to get him in the car and get away from the media circus. I cant say I blame them. She probably reached over and fixed is after they escaped. I sure as hell didn't know how a carseat worked as a first time parent.

Lay off, seriously. I remember how stressful a newborn was. I can't imagine going through it wil billions of people's eyes on me.

I didn't notice til I saw the photo but I'm going to assume they fixed it in the car, or, they'll figure it all out in time.

Just think of the older thread where so many people pointed out how many people would be incorrectly judging them on their safety 'skills' if they went by the pictures shared. Carseats, cribs, etc.

Meh. I assume she fixed it once he put the baby in the car. It would be great if they demonstrated safe carseat usage, but for all we know they did end up adjusting it. It's not like she pulled a Britney & drove with baby on her lap. I can't imagine how terrifying that drive was for him driving, I'm sure they'll figure it out for future use if they haven't already.

@looch: I agree, I don't think it was completely their fault because chances are they've never put a baby in a car seat before, they're probably just like normal stressed out first time parents..but shame on the hospital for letting them leave with him not strapped in properly.

The straps on that seat are the typical 5 point harness, with the over the shoulder and the over the thighs that we're used to in the US. It is one of the only 5 point harness infant buckets available in Europe and Australia, for some reason, most of the models feature a 3 point harness (over the shoulder and just between the legs). We chose this model because it was the one I was the most familiar with (being an American abroad).

The thing is that they are role models to millions of people all over the world. They should have properly belted their son in the car seat, motorcade or not. People see those images and unfortunately make assumptions that if it is good enough for the royals, it is good enough for them.

We don't know, we shouldn't judge :) I wouldn't ever tighten the car seat straps until we put LO into the car seat base. So maybe they did the same? They were probably in a hurry to get him in the car and get home.

@littlebug: you mean people on your facebook feed were talking about how the baby wasn;'t strapped in correctly?

I would never have thought anything looking at that picture. When I put my baby in the car I only adjust the straps once he is snapped into the base in the car. so i'm not sure how anyone can judge anything based on those pics, they weren't seen driving like that!

on another note, i have the b-safe and it looks very similar to this UK Baby safe version.

But then again, none of us are perfect, but so many people are going to be looking to them as an example. I know some people are going to judge how she gave birth, how she feeds him, etc. I could care less. I am definitely looking at this through an american viewpoint, but carseat safety is a big deal were I am. So it is kind of sad that this is what many people will think is appropriate.
