@Anagram: Thanks! Isn't the gunk in the eyes the worst? L has woken up the last 2 days with his eyes glued shut!!! We have to use a warm cloth to open them up, and it scares him and he tries to pry them open. :( So heartbreaking. We're in the thick of day 3 so hopefully this is over in a few days.

My LO had RSV/ bronchiolitis at 6 months that was pretty severe for a week or two (several doctor visits and lots of breathing treatments) and then she had a lingering bad cough for over a month after. It was awful.

This year, she's had a virus with gunky eyes, fever, and cold/flu symptoms twice already this winter--second time she also got a double ear infection. Both time, the worst if it was over in 4-5 days, but the cough lingered for a while. Lots of bad sleep and a lot of wakeups.

Hang in there!

@.twist.: I wouldn't worry so much about feeding with amoxicillin. It's better, but not a huge deal. We treat children whose parents have amox allergies with amox all the time.

I hope he feels better soon and I second the antipyrene benzocaine drops :)

You can ask for some ear numbing drops, too....we had to call back and ask for them and they helped E a lot!!!!

@MamaG: Thanks for checking in. :)

Things are questionable... we ended up taking him to the childrens hospital yesterday night because of a 104 fever that we couldn't break. He apparently has an ear infection. We didn't get home till 10:30pm last night so his sleep is all screwed up. His cough is getting worse. He was prescribed amoxicillin for the ear infection. Today has been the worst. He's totally hysterical. He was ok in the morning but after his nap he just lost it. Woke up crying and won't let anyone touch him and it's taking a really long time to calm him down. Anything is setting him off.

I'm allergic to amoxicillin, so Im nervous and anxious that him being hysterical is a result of an allergy as well? :(

He is supposed to eat with the meds, and not only will he not eat but we're having a hard time with any meds too.... i'm scared to give him the antibiotics on an empty stomach.

So, to say the least, Im a wreck.

@.twist.: You can't escape!!!! We have good luck with the nose frida immediately after a bath. And squirt a little saline up there to loosen anything up that might be causing a blockage. Sometimes the stuff that comes out, I am amazed. It's usually big chunks of stuff, too. Dried stuff. Blech.

@blackbird: I remember last year, it felt like EVERYONE had HFM. haha We didn't get that, thankfully, but now it seems that RSV is the thing this year. The doctor told me she gets daily reports of the most common viruses that day and RSV is at the top of her list along with Influenza A right now. It suuuuucks.

@Mrs. Jacks: Thanks! We have a nose frida, although his nose doesn't seem to be really stuffed right now? It is running a lot, but not plugged. Eyes seem to be the worst at the moment. And thanks for the tips on what to look for. :)

I deal with it every single day. Probably saw 12 kids with it today. Get a nose Frida to suction, keep hydrated and watch for respiratory distress. If your baby is not able to feed, isn't making 3 wet diapers a day or is head bobbing/nasal flaring--- see a provider right away.

It frustrates me a little when I hear that people get a diagnosis of RSV, but weren't actually tested for it. Yes, it's a virus, yes it's like a cold but it's a specific virus. Sorry for the rant.

I'd try to get into the ped earlier rather than later in the week. From personal experience I can tell you that days 3-6 seemed to be the worst for us.

But please do be aware of his breathing. That's the real issue with the virus.

charlie had it when he was around a year old. we had to use a nebulizer at home. now he's 5 and he does tend to get at least one wheezy cold every season where we have to use the nebulizer, but it hasn't been too serious.

Everyone seems to have RSV. One of my friends twins had it and it turned into bronciolitus (i think?) and he had to be hospitalized overnight. And just today as we were on our way to our other friends house for dinner, they called and said their baby has RSV too. I hope he feels better soon!

Ugh everybody seems to have RSV. E had gunk in her eyes a few weeks ago and the dr said it was just a viral thing kids get so ours was non specific. I would sort of rub her eyelid to get the giant blobs to squeeze out because I'm sure they made it hard to see. I also used a warm rag to clean up the crust. She just had a low fever and cold symptoms-bad cough, runny nose, etc. She did develop a nasty ear infection from it, tho. No wheezing

@Mamasig: @MamaG: He is 1.5, so not quite as young as some of your LO's. His fever seems to have broken a bit and we're clearing the mucus as we can. Seems to be worse in the eyes (not so bad, yet, in the nose). Coughing seems to be getting more frequent all of a sudden, maybe because he's a lot busier now that the fever has broken a bit?

How old is your LO? It's more serious the younger they are because they could have difficulty breathing. DS1 had it at about 2 months and we had to go to the doctor everyday to get him checked out. Once he had a fever he was admitted to the hospital. We were there one day.

Breathing treatments only help kiddos that are wheezing, and not all babies wheeze with RSV. So it's likely that your doc didn't hear any wheezing in your LO. If it doesn't help them breathe then they'd be getting the side effects for nothing. The main thing is suction all the snot so they can breathe and keeping hydrated. Hang in there!!

Yes, my 10 week old has it. She never had a fever, but lots of coughing, congestion, eye junk, wheezing and chest retractions. We have been doing albuterol nebulizer treatments since Tuesday. She was diagnosed last Saturday. We were told the worst is at about day 5 and to expect it to linger for two weeks.

From what I know of it, RSV is very common in kids, particularly under 2. It's basically the common cold that adults get. Just keep a close eye on his breathing/wheezing and try to keep him comfortable. Did they give you a nebulizer to do breathing treatments? My LO had a severe case at 5 months and spent a week in the PICU on IV/oxygen. It took him a few weeks to get over it. But again, this was a particularly severe case and he was young, so don't let that panic you.
