We have a white shag rug in the living room... For being there for 3+ years, being a high traffic area with a dog and toddler, it hasn't been too bad! I mean it's def not white anymore... But it wasn't too expensive and I plan on replacing it every 5 years or so and I would still get another white one!

We have a rug under both our kitchen and dining room tables and no issues. We also have a dog who hoovers up anything we drop so maybe that's the reason for no problems?

We had a cream shag rug in our living room for a while. I liked it and it didn't ever seem to get stained. High traffic areas (like right in front of the couch) did get kind of worn down though. My biggest issue was that if you dropped anything small on it, you could never find it! You have to really be on top of cleaning it since you won't always be able to see that it's dirty (like crumbs will just hide in it).

@fancyfunction: Good to know! I wasn't sure how well the shag would clean, like if the texture would change after the rug was shampooed.

@Mrs. Yoyo: Ah yes, the shag rug would be for DH's office, definitely not for under a table. I've been on the hunt for a nice indoor/outdoor rug for under the kitchen table, but I still wonder if I'd be constantly scrubbing spills.

My kids' rugs are pink with a white pattern - high pile wool (not shag). After about 2 years of vacuuming and spot cleaning, they were looking pretty nasty. I rented a steam cleaner and now they look new again. Not sure if you can steam a true shag rug though?

We have a rug under our table. Not shag, though. Spills are fine because it's a fairly dark color/pattern and nothing really shows. Obviously it needs to be vacuumed often. We have a little stick Dyson that is great for that.

I have an indoor/outdoor rug under our dining table. I needed a big size (9x12) and for what the use was, I didn't want to spend a ton of money. I love it because it can really be cleaned easily.

No shag rugs for me. Dhurries are my go to.

We have a white shag rug in our living room and have for about five years. It still looks pretty good - a bit flattened but not dirty or stained.

I have cream shag rugs in the kids rooms and one in ours. They do get a bit matted in high- traffic spots but a good steam/shampoo keeps them clean. I don't have a rug in the dining room b/c the crumbs would drive me crazy!

We need to buy a few rugs, but I have questions! I've seen quite a few white or cream shag rugs on social media, and there's one at West Elm that I've had my eye on. If you have one, has it stayed clean? Will it be filthy in no time?

Also, if you have a rug under your kitchen or dining table, do you regret it? I worry that the minute I buy one, one of the kids (or me!) will knock a plate or bowl full of food on the rug and I'll wish I had saved my money.
