My doctor was the same way (about the progesterone too!) and I had a very healthy pregnancy with #1 and everything is looking good so far with #2. I'm thrilled that he got worked up about the progesterone. In my experience a lot of doctors seem to think its not a big deal but it definitely is.

My doc was the same...just don't be ridiculous :) I agree with @yoursilverlining: women have been having babies for a long, long time. I'm a fan of "do what you feel comfortable with."

...but don't forget that progesterone ;)

My doctor is the same way. She gave me a list of things to avoid while pregnant, but I believe it's a required leaflet from the practice. Otherwise, she's very lax.

I avoid the obvious, but indulge every once in a while. I'll have a glass or coke of two as a treat each week, and won't miss an opportunity for frozen yogurt. I still avoid raw fish, and heat up my deli meat on the rare occasion that I give in to a sandwich (I *so* miss cold, turkey clubs). I have seafood (salmon, cod, halibut, or tuna) once a week, because it's delicious. Everything in moderation, and you're fine.

Your doctor sounds like my doctor. Everything in moderation :-) That's the reason I went to him - I wanted someone who wouldn't make me feel like a failure as a mom if I continued to workout or had deli meat every now and then (or *gasp* soft serve ice cream).

That's why I chose my doc too, he was very relaxed and just said to use common sense, everything in moderation, and avoid illegal drugs and cigarettes.

I must've asked my doctor a dozen times if she was sure feta cheese was okay because of what I had heard/read online. They were very lax about everything. Just the no booze/cigarettes, etc.

The week before I found out I was pregnant, I was in Atlantic City for a girlfriend's birthday, drank a bottle of champagne, ate all kinds of cheese, lounged in a hot tub & steam room. My doctor kept telling me I was fine but Google almost gave me an anxiety attack.

I intend to follow some of these rules, but ever so slightly. I mean the reason you aren't suppose to eat cold cuts is because of Listeria. I remember a listeria outbreak recently, but it wasn't due to cold cuts! I will be having a few glasses of wine over the course of this pregnancy, perhaps a cold cut sandwich, and if I am feeling wild and crazy I might even eat tuna fish!

I agree with @rahlyrah: I think a lot of the rules are scaremongering and over the top. Personally, I think a lot of the doctors in the US are stringent on rules because of the fear of litigation if they don't warn a pregnant woman off something and an adverse consequence happens, even if it was only a one in a million chance it would happen.

I have both feet firmly planted in the everything in moderation camp. I chose to avoid soft cheeses and deli meats, but everything else was fair game. My midwives were pretty laid back and take the moderation is best approach as well.

His attitude sounds kind of annoying, but I tend to agree that a lot of things are overhyped. My midwives gave me a list of foods that 'some women choose to avoid' while pregnant, but they were far from forceful about it. I'm somewhere between 'better safe than sorry' and 'everything in moderation'. Like, I only eat deli meat if I heat it up, even though I'm totally sure it would be fine if I didn't, and I haven't had more than sips of DH's beer (like, a sip every few weeks). But I'll eat soft serve and drink coffee. I have had to explain to non pregnant people that coffee is ok though!

Ugh, so over these "rules." I get that they're in place for a reason (by only SOME doctors...), but a lot seem sooooo over the top. I agree with others with the "everything in moderation" mindset. I figure as long as you aren't stupid with a lot of the "rules" (like getting deli meat from a shaaaady ass place that has zero customers...ever, or something like that), chances are, you'll be fine. There's a risk associated with ev.er.y.thing, so I figure just be smart and do the best YOU can do! :D

Sounds like my OB. She said women act like women haven't been having babies for hundreds of thousands of years; we're hardier than we give ourselves credit for. We're less in control over everything than we want to believe, and we make up arbitrary rules to feel more in control. Yup, I agree with all of it!

My doc was very lax about the rules as well, but it sounds to me like it was more his attitude that bothered you than his advice. I was fine with the lack of rules (actually thrilled!) But that's because my doctor listened to all my concerns and was patient with me. Everything in moderation is one of my rules in life.

Every doctor differs when it comes to food rules. I am in the camp where I believe most of the food rules are fear-mongering. Luckily, my doctor is also pretty lax. I've ignored all of the major ones (with the exception of alcohol, drugs, cigarettes) my entire pregnancy and have made it to 35 weeks without any issue.

I'm to tired to type this up again so I'm copying it from the DueDateTwins board I had posted it on. I am curious as to what other Bee's had to say about my appointment today & if you had a similar experience.

Had my first prenatal appointment today. Did more lab work & should get that tomorrow. The doctor was pissed because a nurse told me to stop taking my progesterone with out a Dr's order. When I asked what my do's & don'ts of pregnancy were he stated there weren't any. I asked if I could eat lunch meat & he said sure why not, you can eat tuna too. You would have to eat a 400# tuna to get a dangerous level of mercury in your system. I can eat what I want & exercise how I want & even have a glass of wine if I want....but all in moderation. He said exercise isn't going to make you miscarry, not having enough progesterone will, TAKE YOUR PROGESTERONE & come back in two weeks. The visit was very quick and the Dr seemed very sure of himself.

My BFF was shocked that he said all of that because she got a huge list of do's and don'ts.

It must have been baby day cause there were like 5 newborns there today so I asked a few mom's if they choose to labor with these Dr's or if they went with an Ob-Gyn. One was a nurse and said that most of the nurses at the hospital come see this group because they are that good. She said these dr's deliver more babies then the Ob-Gyn's in town & she feels more than comfortable staying where she is at. So with that in mind, what my dr said, & what my BFF & all the pregnancy books have said, I have no idea what to do other than TAKE MY PROGESTERONE!
