DH loves to run and I hate it. We have to run in crossfit quite often so he told me the best thing I can do it control my breathing. I breathe in through my nose on a three count and out through my mouth on a three count. Counting while breathing gives me something to concentrate on too. I forget why he said that. Something about keeping your heart rate down and oxygen.

My form? Any way I can get my feet off the ground. I am the most inefficient runner ever. I could use some help!

I ran track on a team for years when I was younger and even though my running days are over I admit that I often make fun of people who look like they don't know how to run. (sorry) Okay, they know the basics, but their form is horrible--the worst offenders are people with their shoulders almost up to their ears and tight, arms held up at their chests or crossing their bodies.

We had to practice running on the balls of our feet and did exercises where we just stood in place and practiced our foot hitting the ground correctly, more mid-foot. I was always taught that heel strike = bad form/over stride.

Breathing, the best breath is making sure that your belly is getting full when you inhale and deflating when you exhale. It doesn't matter whether you're a mouth breather or a nose breather.

@avivoca: I find that my form is much better when I don't have J with me in the stroller, when I have him though I'm just using whatever strength to keep his big butt going ;) I ran on my own tonight and was noticing what a difference I had in my foot strike. I'm very sensitive to the cold & wet weather, I always get sick when I run in the cold so I'm SOOO grateful we have a dreadmill.

@loveisstrange: I over pronate as well! I appreciate your advice, we probably started running about the same time! I'm trying to pay more attention to my form now that I'm not just trying to stay alive as my only goal ;)

@Sammyfab: Oh wow! That sounds like a super intense workout! I might have to try that! I just need to switch it up and not JUST run.

@MsLipGloss: Thanks! I try to keep my breathing even, I stop to walk fast sometimes to keep up with myself but I'm doing better!

I'm a mouth breather, all the way . . . have always been. It's more important that you control your breathing as opposed to trying to breathe a certain way.

I am a natural fore-foot striker . . . which is great for leg toning. BUT, for any kind of a distance, in order to distribute the force more equally throughout your body (as opposed to just in your knees/hips/lower back), a more heel-toe stride is where it's at. ETA: And it does take work, but it is worth the effort.

Relax your hands/arms, and push through your hips . . .it will help to center your stride, and also keep you from expending unnecessary energy. On your speed/interval days, feel free to use your arms. Otherwise, they are loose and close to your waist . . . not drawn up and in front of your body/crossing your body.

It is difficult to train yourself to stop heel-striking and a lot of people experience calf strain and shin splints in the process. The long term benefits outweigh the short term pain though! I found that buying minimalist running shoes really helped to reform my running posture.

I am/was an avid crossfitter but there are tons of workouts that incorporate running and body weight exercises. For example, run 1 mile but set a watch and every minute you stop and do 10 push-ups and 10 squats (or 10 burpees or 20 lunges, etc.). Keep going until you are done your mile.

ETA: a great tip a friend gave me re: breathing is to force an exhale out of your mouth and you'll automatically breathe in through your nose (as long as you close your mouth!).

Im definitely not an experienced runner, by any means. I just started in the last year.

I tend to overpronate, so I really try to focus on making sure my foot strikes the ground in the center instead of the side. I tend to hit with the ball/middle of my foot. I notice that the heel hitting first throws off my stride and makes me more prone to shin splints.

I definitely notice I do better when I breathe in through my nose and out the mouth. Breathing is easier when I have good posture, head up and shoulders back.

I mean... other than that I can't be much help. lol. This is just what helps ME.

I'm a mouth breather. I spend approximately 3/4 of the year stopped up because of my allergies. I'm also a reformed heel-striker, but it was HARD to develop more of a mid foot strike.

They say there is a right way to run, a right way to swing your arms, a right way to breath, etc. but I feel like there are so many ways to do it and none of them are "right."

So I know there are quite a few people on the boards who run. I have questions since Mr. Google has 934875239847 answers to them...I thought I'd ask you all!

Is there a right/wrong way to run? I've seen such differing opinions on heel striking/etc. I know I could re-train myself, I'm not a fantabulous runner or anything. I just want to prevent injury.

What do you do for cross training? I have a workout video arsenal but have only done them a couple of times, I really need to get back into that.

What's your breathing like? I can't breathe in through my nose very well so I'm a mouth breather. It always looks like I'm about to die thanks to that. :P

Any tips for this novice? :)
