I wasn't a mad runner, always pretty slow, and I have to admit that I felt pretty uncomfortable running right from the beginning. When I wasn't feeling well I held off, and never really got back into it. But I know plenty of people who ran right through their pregnancies with no trouble at all! It just wasn't for me.

Running during the first trimester sort of sucked but don't think I was actually all that much slower or running shorter distances. I just complained more :). Second trimester I felt pretty good but suffered an injury (not related to pregnancy) and switched to elliptical and bike at 30 weeks. I tried running again at 38 weeks but experienced a lot of pelvic pain.

I think running during pregnancy is definitely doable but make sure to listen to your body! If you need to switch to lower impact activities, there is no shame on doing so!

I had to stop at 9w not because I was tired but because I was so so sick and became dehydrated, so think about that. If you are unable to keep food and/or water in your body, then you will be forced to quit the workouts:/
I tried to go back at like 21w and....it was ok but I felt like a 300lb person trying to run a marathon so I ended up speed walking instead (treadmill to avoid the summer heat).

I didn't run through pregnancy so am no help :)

Lots of walking though, and got right back to it pp! My doc has said I could run this pregnancy had I wanted to (with #1 we had too many scares and I had a wrecked ankle) but it's just not something I was comfortable with). He did say keeping up with whatever I was currently in shape for, and just listen to body on slowing down! All the best TTC, and with the running, I am already looking forward to getting back at it again in the summer!

I wasn't really a runner, although I had been doing walk/runs for a few months prior to my BFP. I couldn't keep it up very long because cardio made me want to puke. Then it had been so long without doing it I was worried to take it up again.

I became VERY slow and needed a lot of pee breaks and water breaks (which didn't help all the peeing). :) After about 20-ish weeks it was too uncomfortable for me to run much further than a mile. I would just get so sore! I've seen women run through their entire pregnancy, though, so it is just different for everybody.

My doctor told me when I asked her at my last visit (when I was asking about TTC) that as long as I was already running, I could keep running, just not to take it up. I got my BFP on Friday, I ran 10 miles on Saturday. (I ran 9 last Friday - half marathon training.) I usually run a 10 minute pace but last Saturday, I averaged 12-14 (it was really icy so I kept it slow) and this past Saturday I kept it under 12 minute miles for the first 8 and then picked up my pace and ran the last two miles in under 10 minutes each.

I felt pretty good - I had to stop and go to the bathroom along the way, but it was a nice day out and I felt like I was able to control my temperature and I carried water and snacks with me - I didn't eat anything until mile 8 because I wasn't feeling hungry (I probably should have had something earlier and will in the future.)

I highly recommend the book Exercising While Pregnant, which is a scientific examination of women who engaged in longer-duration exercise and talks about issues like heart rate and perceived endurance, etc. I find it very reassuring.

I slow down pretty much right away. I take a just listen to your body approach. For both of my girls I had a nice time in early 2nd trimester, around 16-22 weeks, where running felt good again, not too big yet and I started running faster than I did during my first trimester. For my first I ran throughout my pregnancy though towards the end it became walking with a little big of running thrown in. With my 2nd I stopped running early in my third trimester.

I was running until about 35 weeks (which at that point was a fast walk haha!)....I maintained my pace in the beginning but I'd say around 25 weeks my bump started to move with me so I definitely slowed down.

My advice? Don't worry about pace, just run and listen to your body. I stopped using my watch and just ran because it made me feel good. No worries about pace, distance, stopping, etc....

Good luck on your BFP!

ETA: Sports bra...lots of sports bras. The girls are quite painful in the beginning so keeping them contained was a must!

I couldn't keep it up. It just hurt too badly due to my loosened joints (from the relaxin) and I got winded super quickly.

I was able to keep it up for the first half of pregnancy. I actually ran a half marathon at 18 weeks! I kept up my running until about 30 weeks, but gave it up secondary to plantar fasciitis, which you are more prone to while pregnant and I couldn't take medicine to treat it. Hoping it resolves once baby is out!

Not a runner, but my midwife had told me that whatever I was doing prior to pregnancy, I could continue during. Just don't start anything new- like increased speed or a much further distance.

I slowed down quite a bit, and it got increasingly harder to catch my breath. This happened way earlier than I expected, like in the first tri. I guess it has to do with increasing blood volume? I felt uncomfortable physically and quit at about 19 weeks, although I continued to walk the same or more mileage a week.
I think it's different for everyone. some people don't mind or notice the physical changes, I guess.

My friend and I sometimes run together and we both run about the same speed (11 minute miles). I am TTC and she just told me she is pregnant and wants to continue running together. I am wondering how pregnancy affected your running. (Assume no complications and OB is laid back and says to do what feels comfortable.) Did you have to cut back on speed or distance? If so, how much?
(I want to be a supportive friend, and also curious for myself since I hope I will get my BFP soon.)
