One thing to remember as well is that if you are exclusively breastfeeding, there will still be a ton of relaxin in your body until you wean, so your joints will still be loose and flexible like in pregnancy. You have to be extra careful about injury and overuse until you're down to a couple of feeds a day. I ran pre-pregnancy but stopped with morning sickness, and started 3/weekly Pilates, which I'm back at now 7w pp. My instructor gave me the advice to do about 6-10 weeks of Pilates to get my pelvic floor back up to scratch (foreceps delivery, might as well have birthed a watermelon), and lots and lots of walking before seriously getting back into running. I was so surprised at how weak my abs have gotten from being stretched & separated, things I could do in Pilates without thinking pre pregnancy and during pregnancy I now have to really focus on, and they tire me out so quick! Looking fwd to getting back out for runs though, I really miss it :(

@runnerd: I stopped running as soon as I found out I was pregnant with LO. I had a friable/irritable cervix, was on pelvic rest, so running was a no no. Prior to pregnancy, I ran regularly, and had completed 2 or 3 5ks and a 10k.

I started running again at about 7 months postpartum. I'm running my first half marathon tomorrow (I'm 10 months pp now). I run a lot slower now, but probably because I took such a long break from it. I started running again by doing interval training. I also constantly leak pee. It's annoying and gross. I'm hoping to get to the doctor to have it corrected sometime soon! I love running though, and I'm hoping to continue with it throughout the summer (as long as my knees hold up!).

I ran a lot pre-baby #1. I didn't run at all during my pregnancy due to prior losses and paranoia. When he was about 3 months old I started working my way back into running. I didn't really stick with it though and when I found out I was pregnant again at 5.5 months PP I just quit.

After DD was born I started running again at 6weeks pp. I started with a mile and gradually worked my way up. She's 5.5 months now and I consistently run 3, 4 and 5 mile runs during the week and I'm training for a half. I never have had peeing while running problems.

The peeing myself was probably my biggest issue getting back into running post partum. I really took pride in being a runner and coming home soaked in pee was reallllly hard on me as I had been looking forward to getting back at it for so long. That part was something I really didn't expect.

I didn't run preggo wth #1 because of an ankle injury, so when I got the go ahead to work out, I began 2.5m pp with 30 day shred just to get my cardio going, began running at 4m pp and at 6m pp (a year ago this weekend!) I ran my 6m pp goal race (10km).

I ran it in 49:56, and pre-baby have pb'd it at 43:20, but in regular good shape for me would have been a 45 min or so 10k'er, this race my goal was sub-50, I'm glad he race was chipped, haha!

I would have regularly run 15k max, have never really run any further and am a pretty casual runner, again aside from the peeing part (which eventually totally went away, pee free by race day!) I made it back into running fairly well!

I will be 39w on Monday with #2, am due for knee surgery in June, so I will be salivating for a run late summer/early Fall!

I started back at 3 months PP, and runs feel great! I lost some muscle tone, but I'm working my way back. Pee issues have only occurred once or twice... Usually only during things like jumping jacks :)

Just wanted to add, because it's like my personal mission on HB: leaking pee postpartum doesn't have to happen and is fixable. Talk to your doctor. I had a different pelvic floor issue, and it was resolved in about 2 months with physical therapy. While I was there the PT kept talking about how women just assume it's inevitable and normal, so they don't do anything about it, and are embarrassed so they don't mention it to their doc!

I always strap J into the jogger so I don't feel like I'm missing out on time w/him. I didn't run a step while pg and waited until 4mo pp (when I felt disgustingly fat...was getting asked my due date!!!) and Jair eases into it similar to c25k just on my own.

I agree on panty liners & black! :-( hand held up for a running-leaker. It has improved over time tho!

I'm working my way back now, but it took a solid five months before my pelvis stopped aching during/after runs. I went very slowly at first, but now I'm up to run/walking three miles with the stroller.

I did a combination of running and walking until about 20 weeks. I think I started running again about 10 weeks postpartum. I'll never forget that first run. it was a little over a mile, my legs were like jelly at the end and I was soaked from leaking a bit of pee with every step. So gross. But I got back into running shape super quickly and I think I was doing 4-5 mile runs shortly after. Always with a pantyliner and always wearing black haha.

I was a pretty regular runner while pregnant... 1/2s, fulls, 10Ks...but didn't run a step during my pregnancy.

I only started running again about 5 months PP, mostly because I was tired and it was a cold winter. I started with a couch to 5K program because each workout was short - and that's all the time I had to spare with an infant .

Now at 8 months PP I can comfortably do 5K but honestly don't see myself running longer distances until she's older and I have more spare time (so in like 18 years?? Haha)

Eta: no peeing issues here!

I stopped running in the 3rd tri when I became high risk. I resumed at 6 weeks after clearance from my doc, but just want to caution you to take it slow! My hormones were still out of wack and I had knee pain and had to stop again for like a month! I am now running 2-4 times a week 3-4 miles per run, and about 30 seconds slower per mile than I used to. I used to run 4 miles 6 days a week. But it's more because of breastfeeding than anything else!

Also, I had a c section and have no abs now. But no peeing issues!

I started back around 6-7 weeks postpartum, pretty much like @Mrs Spoon: I did half a mile, verryyyy slowly, for a week. Then gradually ran longer each week. I never peed on myself, but I had a c-section, so I don't know if that had anything to do with it. I had some issues with my incision healing, so I was really gentle with myself for a little while.

I stopped running at about 18 weeks. I continued walked about 3 miles a day, most days of the week. I ran 3 miles at 8 weeks postpartum. I ran a 5k race in August, and was about 4 minutes slower than my usual time, BUT I was running with my aunt....I probably could have been more like 2 minutes slower.

Honestly, the hardest part for me has been having the energy to go when I'm constantly sleep deprived. And pushing the stroller is no joke. But I was surprised at how easily I was able to bust out 3 miles without any walking breaks. I used to run 4-5 miles a few times a week, now I get in 3 miles a couple times a week, mixed with walking. My daughter does like the jogging stroller so far, but I feel bad having her sit in there for long periods of time, so I try to keep it brief,

I ran in my pregnancy until about 25 weeks and then started up again at about 7w pp. I started with one mile and worked my way up to 4 gradually. Like I did one mile for a week and then went up to 2 for two weeks. That slow! My first couple runs we're hard because my mind felt like I was in shape and ready to go strong, but my body was weak. I definitely peed myself and still need to wear a pad and am seeing a pelvic floor specialist (7 months pp). I'd say if approved by your dr or midwife, start doing kegels as soon as you can to strengthen your pelvic floor. And remember to be kind to your body pp. it's been through a lot!!

...but ran regularly before pregnancy, how did getting back into running go post-baby? When did you start running again? Was it like starting all over again as a non-runner? When could you run 5k, 10k, etc? Do you pee yourself while running????

For several reasons, I have not run one step during my pregnancy, but was a regular runner before (from 5ks to marathons).

Sorry so many questions but I'm wondering how hard the road back to running will be!
