You can totally do it! Run but go slowly. I did my first 5k race last year and I ran the whole time even though I was slow (finished in like 35 min). I loved when I would see someone pass me running and then pass them when they started walking and i continued at my running snail's pace.

Sign up! You won't regret it even if you end up working some. There is such great positive energy during a race that the adrenaline will push you through. It gets quite addicting actually.

I felt the exact same way you did last year. The momentum of all the other runners kept me running. I also ran it with my sister who kept me going. She could have finished the race way ahead of me, but stuck with me and kept me going.

I used C25K for my first 5K last year and it was what made it possible for me to do it.

Now I want to find a race.

@jetsa: haha, I totally forgot that we've had that conversation before. Im dumb. I think that's honestly us too. I don't know that we're capable of doing one together, but he wants to try... I guess we'll see. :/

Do it!

I am running my first 5k on Sunday, eek! I also am doing the C25K app, and my goal for this first race is to jog as much as I can and walk parts of it. I think I'll do better with the end goal of just finishing, rather than focusing on a certain time goal.

@loveisstrange: Yep, I live relatively close ;). DH and I can't run together, his natural pace is so much faster than mine, we've just given up bc it stresses him out to slow down and me to speed up. We just meet at the finish line

@mrs. wagon: Ive run... well, jogged (who am I kidding) a couple 5ks on the treadmill, but I know thats not the same. Although I do set the incline up a bit and I probably go faster on the treadmill than I do on the street. Definitely mention the C25k if you do a beginning running post! There's a different version called Zombies Run! 5k, which is similar but has a storyline, which is fun.

@Mrs. High Heels: @avivoca: I think my issue is that DH was special forces and ran like 25 miles a week up until a few months ago! We tried once to run a 5k together (a couple years ago, Im in better shape now) and it was a disaster. He didnt want to slow down for me because he was running with his work buddies and his ego demanded he go as fast as he could. I just dont want to feel like Im holding him back!

@jetsa: Haha, that's why I want to do it once before the summer. Our summers get brutal hot and like 1000% humidity, so I dont want to do my first one then. Yuck.

Not everyone runs the whole way so you will be fine. My first race was a little 2 miler and I thought for sure I'd run the whole way nope, it was insanely hot and I didn't run slow enough so I walked parts, it was no big deal.

I had signed up for my first run in the fall but I got sick and couldn't make it. But I totally planned on run/walking. I just jogged my first 2 5ks (not races, just in my neighborhood) and was totally thinking about writing a "running for beginners" blog post. I'm excited for the spring to sign up for my first race.

SIGN UP!!!!

My very first run, was run/walk and my goal was just to finish! It helped that I was running with a friend, and he really pushed me along so I did run more than walk, but still. Just the fact that you're doing it is awesome!

It helps to train to pace yourself though - when I first started running I'd run too fast without realizing and run out of steam fast.

SIGN UP!!!!

For a 5k, I usually run the entire way. I have to work hard to pace myself, since my natural inclination is to run as fast as possible at the beginning until I burn out and then walk. For anything longer than 5k, I usually walk through water stops because I am 29 years old and can't drink anything while I'm moving or I spill it on myself.

I finished Week 4 Day 1 of the C25k today. Im on track to finish it the first week of March and I wanted to sign up for a run sometime in March as motivation.

So tell the truth, when you first started doing 5ks, did you run the entire way or did you run/walk? Part of my brain is telling me that I shouldn't do a 5k race unless I can run the entire thing, but I know that lots of people don't run the whole thing.

I was sort of wanting to sign up for the St Patrick's Day 5 mile race here in my city, but Im like... irrationally nervous about doing so. I wanted to do a Graffiti Run 5k at the end of March, but DH refuses to do a color run and I want him to do it with me.

Someone tell me to stop being a chicken shit and just sign up.
