Thanks everyone! I got fitted for shoes a while ago (they assessed my gait on the treadmill and everything) and just need to dig up those shoes. They got misplaced in our last move!

I could run on a trail instead of on pavement, but I worry that I would just twist my ankles. I'll try out ankle braces and see if those help!

I echo the advice given above: get properly fitted for sneakers, wear orthotics if you need them, and running on the side of the road can really mess you up since it's graded.

Everyone gave good advice. Doing strength training in your legs along with good fitting shoes/insoles will make a huge difference.

@mr. bee, I looked it up through my insurance and found one near my office. They have this online search thing we can use. He also did the surgery on both my toes!

I sprained my ankle a few years ago, and I occasionally have pain there. I agree with others, get fitted for shoes. Additionally, wearing an ankle brace has helped me, since my ankle is weak. You can buy one at most drug stores/walmart/etc.

Get fitted for sneakers.

I get ankle pain during soccer season because cleats are terrible for my feet. I strengthen them by doing ankle exercises- trace the alphabet with your toe over and over again!

I have terrible ankle with a lot of flexibility. I had to buy shoes with high arches and wear orthotics in my day to day shoes. Shoes helped, taping my ankles helps and going really slow and getting strong. So, lots of walking in shorter spurts before running and lots of toe raises and just general strength training. I love swimming when my ankles really start acting up.

Exactly what PPs have said. Get fitted for good shoes, and running on sidewalks really can mess you up.

Where do you run? Sidewalks are the worst for your body, and I notice more pain when I've been running on sidewalks too much. Streets are better than sidewalks (I sometimes run in the bike lane), but I love running on dirt whenever possible. Do you live near any running trails?

The very least you should do is get fitted properly for shoes! That could make all the difference, but if it doesn't help, then you will know you either need to back off or explore other options.

A runner friend of mine had something happen and even though it was ankle pain, it was actually due to a ligament or muscle way up towards the knee.

Have you been fitted for sneakers before? A lot of my knee problems improved after I had someone at a running store evaluate my stride and suggest shoes to address my issues. I was wearing shoes with more support than I actually needed.

Other things, like backing off on running to build strength slowly will also help. Increase time and distance gradually so tha your muscles adjust.

How does one find a podiatrist btw?

Sooo...i have the same problems. Mine were due to a falling arch and a pronation. I have to wear orthotics and special shoes. My podiatrist told me that when I start running again, I need to start off very slow and add mileage very slowly, and he says I should never run more than 5 miles.

I've been running 3x a week, and have noticed that my ankles have started to hurt (they've always been weak, since bad sprains in high school). I'm taking today off of running while I re-evaluate what's going on.

I am considering cutting back on the number of days I run, and also just running more slowly. Or perhaps I need to just completely rest my ankles a bit, and stop running (I would still work out with weights at the gym). Or I could buy new shoes.

Any suggestions from runners on what could be causing the pain, and how to handle it?
